Baseball news today. J.C. Romero did sign a AAA deal with the Yanks, we’ll see if he has anything left to be a LOOGY.

Greg Golson brought up from AAA to take A-Rod’s roster space. He was .296-5-25 at SWB.

From Lohud:

Mark Prior is back pitching after missing almost
three months because of a strained groin. He allowed an unearned run and one hit over two innings for the Gulf Coast League Yankees against Atlanta minor leaguers.

Yankees reliever Rafael Soriano threw 25 pitches during his second batting
practice session since going on the disabled list May 17 because of right elbow
inflammation.

Left-hander Pedro Feliciano, hoping to avoid surgery for a left shoulder
tear, has resumed a light throwing program.

Reliever Damaso Marte, coming back
from left shoulder surgery, is continuing to throw off a bullpen mound.

An awful outing for Colon, his second in a row after being so good this year. And when I say awful, I mean COYOTE UGLY.

Colon lasted just 2/3 of an inning. 8 R, just 3 ER (error by Nunez at 3B. His D really needs improvement), 6 hits, 2 walks, 0 K. ERA from 3.20 to 3.47, but it probably should have been worse. Ayala finished the first and pitched the second. 1 1/3, 1 R, 2 H, 0 walks and K. ERA 1.59. It didn’t help matters that when Ayala relieved Colon in the first, that he balked home a run.

The Yanks got four back in the third. Jones HR’d (5, 412 career). After an out, Gardner singled, Jeter walked, Granderson tripled in two and Teix got an RBI groundout. 9-4.

Noesi in for Ayala for the 3rd.

Bautista left the game with an injured ankle. In the 6th, Andruw Jones finally does something (outside of one 2-hr game he had earlier this year). He hits a 3-run HR (6, 413 career) to have another 2-HR game this year and bring the Yanks to 9-7 down. They were down 9-0 after two innings.

From Buster Olney: Looks like Colon not completely healed with his hammy;wincing when covering first base. If Yankees stay to form, he’s probably headed to DL.         Return of Nova?

After Jones’ HR, Gardner and Jeter singled (3005 for Derek) but were left stranded. After 5 1/2, 9-7 Toronto.

…and that’s as close as they got. 16-7 loss.

Noesi, their best pitcher of the night, went 3 1/3, 2 R, 4 H, 1 walk and 4 K. Toronto got two in the sixth to make it 11-7. Noesi’s ERA went to 3.45.

Logan got the last two outs in the sixth, none in the seventh. 2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 walks, 0 K.  ERA to 3.63.

Then, the white flag of surrender. Mitre. Once again, the Meat Tray served meat balls. 2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER (the Yanks made 3 errors tonight, Nunez, Martin and Jeter), 5 H, 0 walks, 1 K. Overall ERA? 4.58. ERA since back with the Yankees? A whopping 14.54.

Toronto got two in the seventh, 13-7, then three in the eighth for the final of 16-7.

Colon goes to 6-5, 3.47.

Jeter and Posada have now played in more games together than any other pair of Yankees’ teammates.

  1. I have seen enough of Mitre already that off speed stuff no longer works. Release him ASAP. I am also ready to give up on A. Jones and then he goes and hits 2 dingers but Golson is worth giving some time to he is being screwed at AAA. Nunez’s glove is scary and Pena is a waste of time and space. Why all the talk about starting pitching when A-Rod is out 2 months and the team hitting is not good unless you can live and die with home run production. What are your thoughts of where Cashman should be looking for an upgrade at the deadline?

    • Yeah, I can’t stand Mitre, Dennis. I call him Meat Tray because he serves meatballs. I wanted Juan Rivera when the Blue Jays DFAd him. I wanted to replace Andruw with Rivera, but then Rivera goes to the Dodgers. It would have been tough for the Yanks to work something out with Toronto for Rivera, however. Nunez bat I like (he had two hits tonight in the 7-1 loss) but his glovework and arm do worry me. I don’t know if they’ll look for a 3b. Melvin Mora was released, he’s old and would need some rehab game. Casey Blake? He is old, too. It would be perfect if Chavez was ready to come back and could platoon with Nunez until A-Rod comes back, but Chavez isn’t ready yet. If he is ready by the deadline, then no deal. I don’t know why they can’t bring up Montero or Romine. Martin is at .221 or so, Cervelli .214. Martin had a good April but is sinking like a stone since. I’d like a lefty reliever that could get lefties (esp. Boston’s) out. They signed J.C. Romero to a AAA deal, to see what he has. Hmmm… cost nothing. I’d really like Randy Choate there. Choate has postseason experience. Has the prior Yankee experience. Just a LOOGY, but lefties are 5 for 50 off him this year, 21 strikeouts. As opposed to Logan, who is SUPPOSED to get lefties out. As for starting pitching, the latest has Kuroda and Jiminez being watched. We’ll have to see if Garcia and Colon start to wear out, and if Hughes can get back to stuff. It’s funny, but I believe they should be using Nova and Noesi MORE. Instead, Noesi doesn’t start, and Nova was sent down (and has had two good outings for SWB since he was sent down). So, C: I’d like Montero or Romine up to backup Martin and Cervelli sent down. 3B: Depends on Chavez health. Relief: Soriano may be back in two weeks, hopefully the Soriano of last year with the Rays shows up for 2 1/2 months. I’d like Choate, but maybe all they get is Romero. I’d like a righty hitting OF to replace Jones. Thames was DFA’d by the Dodgers when they got Rivera, but he can’t play D. I’d consider just keeping Golson (speed, D) and getting rid of Jones. Yes, Golson doesn’t have the power of Jones, but shoot, Golson can hit .211 too. Probably better, and with less strikeouts. A lot of upgrade depends on some rehabbing players. Lefty bullpen, starter if you can get one. 3b if Chavez won’t be back soon. Bring up Montero or Romine…
