Games 37 & 38. Yanks split a DH behind great pitching.

If I told you that Yankees’ pitchers would give up just one run in a DH, you might think it’d be CC and Kuroda, or Pettitte or Hughes… with Mo and D-Rob in relief.

but would you have thought of Phelps, Nuno and Warren? Probably not.

It’s too bad that the great pitching effort led to just a split of a (rare) traditional DH today rather than a sweep.

Nowadays, you see more of the day/night DHs, two separate admissions, two gates, more $$$$. But with two postponements in April, and both the Yankees and Indians needing to put these two games behind them and get on to their next destinations, it was an old-time 2 for the price of 1 DH.

In game one, David Phelps made just one mistake, and it cost him the game as the Yanks lost 1-0. He gave up a HR to Jason Kipnis in the first inning. Unfortunately, the Yanks only got four hits and three of those were infield singles.

Phelps (L, 1-2, 4.33) 6 2/3, 1 r, 4 H, 5 walks and 7 K.

Logan 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 2.61.

Claiborne 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks and 1 K. ERA still 0.00.

Corban Joseph made his MLB debut in this game.

Game 2: Vidal Nuno made his 1st MLB start (2nd MLB game) & got his 1st MLB win with five scoreless innings. He’s now pitched eight innings this year for the big club, ERA still 0.00. The Yanks won 7-0.

Nuno 1-0, 0.00   5 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 3 walks and 3K.

Adam Warren finished up the last four innings for his first save. D-Rob and Mo had pitched in four of the previous five games, so for Nuno and Warren to team up on a shutout was huge for saving the bullpen (so was Phelps in a losing effort in game one).

Warren 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 walks and 4 K. 1st MLB save, ERA 1.45.

In the first, Nix singled, and went to third on a Cano single and an error. Wells forceout made it 1-0 Yanks.

The Yanks got six in the seventh to break open a close game. Corban Joseph doubled for his first MLB hit. After Alberto Gonzalez popped up a bunt attempt, Austin Romine got his first MLB hit of the season to make it 2-0. Gardner walked and Nix singled to make it 3-0. After Cano struck out, Wells singled to make it 4-0. Overbay then doubled in two, 6-0. Ben Francisco reached on an error, Overbay scoring, for the final of 7-0.

The Yanks now are 24-14 on the season and come home to face Seattle.

The Yanks, between games, brought up Brett Marshall and sent down OF Brennan Boesch. It appears as if the Grandy Man is close to coming back.

The Minors today.

AAA: 7-6 loss for SWB. Emergency starter Kelvin Perez 5 R in 2 IP (scheduled starter Brett Marshall may be activated for the DH tomorrow. Him or infielder Corban Joseph). High A: Tampa off.

Low A: Charleston won 9-8. 1B Rey Nunez 2 H, HR, 4 RBI.

The Minors Today.

AAA: SWB won 4-3. Wang 3 R in 7 2/3. ND, ERA 2.84. Our old buddies Cody Eppley 2/3 (W, 2-1, 2.13) and Clay Rapada (S #1, 2/3 Ip, 0.00) finished up. Granderson 2-4, RBI. He DH’d today. 2B Corban Joseph 2 hits. 2 doubles, RBI for CF Melky Mesa. C Bobby Wilson 2 H, RBI.

AA:  Trenton won 6-2. Jeremy Bleich 3 scoreless IP. Matt Tracy 2 R in 5 2/3 IP. DH Kyle Roller 2 H, solo HR. 2 H, RBI LF Ramon Flores.

Low A: Charleston won 8-0. Gabe Encinas, Brett Gerritse and Alex Smith combined for 14K. 3 H, HR, 4 rbi for 1B Rey Nunez.  2 H, rbi for both DH Greg Bird and LF Kelvin De Leon.

Dellin Betances has now been turned into a reliever. 2 1/3 tonight in relief, no runs, 0 hits, 3 K.   3 H, 2 RBI for OF Zoilo Almonte. 2 H, 3B Ronnier Mustelier, DH Dan Johnson and 2B Corban Joseph. 3 hits for CF Melky Mesa.

AA: 3-2 win for Trenton. Mikey O’Brien 6 scoreless IP.

Joba to the DL

Cervelli, Teix, Youk, A-Rod, Jeter, Granderson, Pineda, Cesar Cabral, Nova,

…now add Joba. He goes on the 15-day DL with an oblique strain.

No replacement yet.

Gee, I’m wondering if I missed someone. The way things are, I may have.

A M*A*S*H* unit.

And from the LOHUD blog:

Michael Pineda pitched in extended spring training today and was at 93, up to 95 mph. Cashman sounds encouraged.

Chien-Ming Wang is not a candidate to replace Chamberlain.

Corban Joseph has been optioned to Triple-A to make room for Chris Nelson.

Gm. 26. Kuroda guts it out, Yanks win 7-4. Save #10 for Mo. Yanks finish April 16-10.

The Castaways are doing ok. I’m not talking the Skipper, Gilligan, Ginger or Maryanne here.

I’m talking Overbay, Hafner, Wells …. players discarded by their former teams who are with the Yanks now. Players with a chip on their shoulder and who have something to prove. For these players have helped the Yanks end April at 16-10 after a 1-4 start.

16-10 x 6 = 96-60 with 6 games left. Any Yankees’ fan will sign up for that in a heartbeat.

Hiroki Kuroda struggled early but put it together for 7 scoreless innings tonight. He stranded 7 in the first 3 innings, but rebounded. 7 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 4 walks and 8 K. He goes to 4-1, 2.25.

Funny but I remember how Cashman was blasted for signing him. Some said he was no good (forgetting that he got no run support while with the Dodgers) and would stink with the Yanks in the AL East.

Well, since the Yanks signed him, he is 20-12 as a Yankee. He had a good ERA last year (3.32) and is at 2.25 now. I argued with those people then that Kuroda would be fine.

I wonder if they are listening now?

One of the castaways, Travis Hafner, had 3 hits tonight and drove in 3 runs. Ichiro is finally starting to heat up. He was down at .200 a while ago and his 3 hits tonight put him at .268. Overbay had a solo HR (4) tonight and most importantly, Eduardo Nunez had 3 hits to take him to .203. Granted Nunez’ BA is still terrible, but he was down at .169 and maybe this gets him going.

The Yanks need something from the left side of the infield, esp. with no A-Rod, Youk (for now) or Jeter. Nunez is at .203 and Nix at .219. That can’t last for long. They have to heat up.

Chris Stewart got two hits and is at .294—-much better than anyone expected.

Youk was put on the DL and Corban Joseph (24, lefty bat, .273-4-9, 1B/2B/3B) was brought up from AAA.

Things got interesting late. Up 4-0, D-Rob gave up 2. After the Yanks came back with 3 in the bottom of the 8th, the Astros got 2 in the top of the 9th and Mo was needed.

Mo picked up save #10, #618 for his career. ERA to 1.74. He doesn’t look like a 43-year-old who is retiring to me.

D-Rob 1 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 0 walks and 2 K. ERA to 4.22.

Kelley 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 7.84.

Hence Mo. 1 batter, 5 pitches and the save.
