AAA: SWB was supposed to have a DH today. Both games were ppd.

AA: Trenton lost 9-5. Francisco Rondon 6 R in 5 IP. C Kyle Higashioka 2 h, 3 rbi.

High A: Tampa lost 9-2. Shane Greene 5 R, 3 ER, in 7 iP. Manny Barreda 4 R in just 1/3 IP. 2B Rob Refsnyder is on fire. 2 hits. .410 at High A after hitting .370 at Low A. For this season, 36 for 93 in 23 games. .387-1-16. Wow. He is 22 and a righty bat. He only hit .241-4-22 in 46 games at Low A Charleston last year, and I wonder (with Cano at 2B) what other positions he can play. But what an April!

Low A: Charleston got only 1 hit in the whole game but won 1-0. Gabe Encinas six shutout innings and the only hit was by CF Jake Cave. Ben Paullus 2 scoreless and Taylor Garrison one scoreless IP. The run came in the bottom of the 8th, and came without the benefit of a hit. With one out, Taylor Dugas walked and stole second. He went to third on a WP, and Claudio Custodio walked. With Jake Cave batting, Custodio stole second and went to third on a WP, while Dugas scored.

The minors today.

AAA: SWB dropped to 0-4 on the season, losing 6-2. Brett Marshall gave up 5 R in 3 2/3. The RailRiders managed just 4 hits. Dan Johnson, who had an awful spring for the Yanks, is just 1 for 17 so far.

AA: Trenton is now 2-1 after a 9-7 win today. Francisco Rondon 3 R in 5 IP. 3B Rob Segedin 3 H, 3 RBI. CF Ramon Flores 2 H, 2 RBI. Each of the first six hitters in the lineup got at least 2 hits.

S.T. Game 15. Jeter, Mo play, but Yanks lose 2-1 on the day Mo announces 2013 will be it.

Mariano Rivera made it official in a press conference this morning, that this year would be his last. He then took the mound in a game for the first time since tearing his ACL last May.

1-2-3, with two K. Of course. That’s why he’s the great Mariano. He pitched the one inning, the fifth.

Derek Jeter singled on the first pitch he saw in game action since breaking his ankle in game 1 of last year’s ALCS. Of course. Jeter was 1 for 2 for the game, playing as the DH.

It wasn’t enough to keep the Yanks from losing the game 2-1 and falling to 3-12 for spring training (thank goodness these games don’t count).

Jose Ramirez continued his solid spring. The 23 year old, who was 7-6, 3.19 for High-A Tampa last year, pitched the first four innings, no runs, one hit, no walks and 4 K. You wonder if he is going to AA Trenton or if they’ll jump him right to AAA. He’s been great this spring.

Joba pitched one scoreless inning, then Francisco Rondon gave up a run in the seventh. Cody Eppley pitched a scoreless eighth, and Jim Miller gave up a run in the ninth.

In the ninth, Bobby Wilson blooped a single and Slade Heathcott beat out an infield hit. After an out and an error, Thomas Neal hit an RBI groundout for the Yanks’ only run.

Ichiro had two hits, and Ronnier Mustelier had a triple (but Mustelier struck out with two on and no one out in the ninth).

S.T. Game 11. Yanks lose 2-0, Teix shut down.

Mark Teixeira was supposed to play 1b for the U.S. in the WBC. Supposed to.

Instead he goes back to the Yanks, and will be shut down for about 2 weeks due to a sprain in his forearm.

You have to be worried about the injuries. CC, Jeter and Mo are coming off them, while A-Rod, Hughes, Granderson and Teix have them.

…. and that’s not counting GM Brian Cashman.

In tonight’s game, the Yanks lost 2-0 to the Braves. David Phelps pitched well again, but lost. In 9 innings this spring, Phelps has given up just one run.

Tonight Phelps went 4, and gave up 1 r on 2 H. Joba pitched a scoreless inning.

Branden Pinder had a scoreless inning, Mark Montgomery gave up a run in 1/3 IP, and Francisco Rondon pitched an inning and 2/3, scoreless. Rondon, a lefty, has an outside shot at making the team. Shawn Kelley wrapped up with a scoreless inning.

The Yanks managed just five hits, two by the red-hot Gardner. Ichiro, who has had a good spring had one.

One continuing trouble spot is the errors by the prospects. Corban Joseph had two today, and J.R. Murphy one.

The loss drops the Yanks S.T. record to 3-8.

S.T. Game 9: Nova, Stewart, Gardner lead Yanks to 10-3 win.

Brett Gardner continued his hot spring with 2 hits and 2 SB, Ivan Nova had a sharp debut and Chris Stewart homered as the Yanks beat the Tigers 10-3 today in their spring training game. It snapped a 7-game spring training losing streak for the Yanks.

If Gardner takes what he’s done so far into the regular season, he’ll be a sparkplug. He’s hit in every game he’s played in so far. Ichiro was 0 for 3 today but he’s had a good spring so far too.

Prospects Tyler Austin was 1 for 1 with 2 rbi, Corban Joseph was 1 for 2 with 2 RBI, and Luke Murton had a hit and an RBI.

Robbie Cano also added a hit and an RBI.

Nova threw two scoreless innings, David Aardsma gave up a run in his inning as did Clay Rapada. After Shawn Kelley’s scoreless inning, Mark Montgomery gave up a run in his inning of work. Matt Daley, Francisco Rondon and Jim Miller finished up, all with a scoreless inning of work.

Nova pounded the strike zone, throwing 22 of his 27 pitches for strikes.

The Lower Hudson Journal reports that the first cuts have been made:

· RHP Corey Black · RHP Matt Daley · RHP Nick Goody · RHP Shane Greene · RHP Bryan Mitchell · RHP Zach Nuding · RHP Mike O’Brien · RHP Ryan Pope · 1B Kyle Roller

Players are now leaving teams for the WBC, so the next few weeks could get funky.

S.T. Game 5. Yanks lose, 10-7, embarrassingly

I don’t care if you ARE running out minor league players. Five errors in a game is completely unacceptable (Nik Turley, Corban Joseph, Jose Pirela, Walt Ibarra and MAJOR LEAGUER Jayson Nix).

Nik Turley started and was pathetic. Now Turley had a good year last year between High A (most of the year) and AA (one start, a win), going 10-5, 3.00 in 22 starts and 2 relief appearances. He K’d 117 in 117 IP.

But good God almighty was he awful today.

He got only one man out. 1/3 IP, 5 R, 4 ER on 3 H. He walked one, made an error and threw two wild pitches. I don’t know how you can get worse than that. The only plus was that the only out he recorded was a K.

Cody Eppley replaced him. He gave up 2 runs in 1 1/3 IP. Matt Daley came in, walked a batter and got an out. Lefty Francisco Rondon helped his cause with 2 scoreless IP. Tom Kahnle and Mark Montgomery each threw a scoreless IP. Josh Spence gave up 3 runs, all unearned, in his inning of work. Preston Claiborne and Ryan Pope each threw a scoreless inning.

Ok, we haven’t seen CC, Kuroda, Andy, Mo, Hughes or Nova yet. Nor have we seen Rapada, Aardsma or Logan.

But five errors and that performance by Turley were still pathetic. The Yanks were down 7-0 after 1 1/2 in a game they’d lose 10-7. It dropped their spring record to 1-4.

Brett Gardner had a triple and 3 RBI. Kyle Roller had 2 RBI. Chris Stewart 1 for 2 with an RBI, Cervelli 1 for 2.

It’s one thing to lose with minor leaguers who play the game crisply. It’s another thing to lose with ANYONE who plays sloppily.

Other news: This one hurts. ESPN reports that Phil Hughes, because of the bulging disk in his back, may NOT be ready for Opening Day. We’ve seen too many injuries (or people coming off injuries) to make us feel optimistic so far.

The Yanks are taking things slow with Kevin Youkilis, who reported a cramp above his hip (oblique) the other day.
