S.T. Game #29. Banuelos wins last start before going to minors, 4-2. A-Rod HR, 3 hits for Dickerson.

Today’s lineup. Note Dickerson. Also note the Gardner/Jeter at the top lineup. It appears as if Girardi will be going Gardner 1, Jeter 2 vs. righties, but Jeter 1, Swisher 2 vs. lefties.

Brett Gardner CF
Derek Jeter SS
Mark Teixeira 1B
Alex Rodriguez 3B
Nick Swisher RF
Jorge Posada DH
Chris Dickerson LF
Eduardo Nunez 2B
Austin Romine C

LHP Manny Banuelos

I’d expect Banuelos to be sent down right after the game today.

I should mention my bracket. Shot. Had Ohio St. going all the way. I picked three of the Elite 8. Two Final 4 teams, Kansas (my title game loser) and Florida are still alive. Ok, who had Kansas/VCU for the SW Final? Seriously.

Now, I root for Kentucky to go all the way. Why? Since 1949, each time Ky has won the NCAA in the spring, the Yankees won the WS in the fall (of course, the Yanks have also won the WS when Ky didn’t win the title).

Off the bench: C Gustavo Molina, 1B Eric Chavez, 2B Doug Bernier, SS Ramiro Pena, 3B Ronnie Belliard, LF Austin Krum, CF Justin Maxwell, RF Abe Almonte.

Out of the bullpen: Mariano Rivera, Rafael Soriano, Joba Chamberlain, Dave Robertson, Boone Logan, Mark Prior, Luis Ayala, Romulo Sanchez, Steve Garrison, Josh Schmidt, Pat Venditte and Chase Whitley.

One guy to watch. I just heard a local program and I swear, they should get me to host it. The guys on the radio show didn’t impress me with their baseball knowledge. Both had the Rockies to win the NL West, with the Giants not even making the wild card. Umm…. defending World Champs? Full year from Posey? Lincecum, Sanchez, Cain and now a FULL year from Bumgarner? Zito (and his contract) is a #5. This rotation matches up quite well when compared to the Phils. I know Wilson has some problems right now, but they ARE the defending champs, and…

Keep an eye on this guy: Brandon Belt. You may never have heard of him before, but he could be this year’s Buster Posey as far as the Giants go. He is being compared to another Giant 1B of the past, Will Clark, and that’s not a bad comparison. Belt is 6’5″, 195. Bats lefty. 1B (Huff could go to the OF, and Burrell’s spot could be in jeopardy). It depends if Belt starts the year with SF, since he started 2010 in High A. But Belt made the jump from High A to AA to AAA all in one year. His numbers last year, combined? 136 games. .352-23-112. 22 for 30 in SB. 43 doubles. 10 triples. Not only that, good plate patience with 93 walks. He’ll be 23 on April 20th. He may need a bit more seasoning, but he could be to the 2011 Giants what Posey was to the Giants last year.

Banuelos not on top of his game, some walks, but has a 2-1 lead after 3. Alex 6th HR of S.T. 2-run shot.

3 IP is it for Banuelos. 3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 3 walks and 3 K. Mo in (early, 4th) to get work.

Typical Mo. Scoreless inning, gave up two hits, one a cheap infield hit. 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 walks, 1 K.

Banuelos ERA for S.T.? 2.13.

The Yanks made it 3-1 in the 4th as Dickerson, who the Yanks got yesterday in the Mitre trade, singled in a run.

The Yanks used the bullpen today. Soriano gave up a run in the 5th. 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 walks and 1 K. Logan finished the inning, and started the sixth. 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 h, 0 walks, 1 K. Robertson finished the sixth, 2/3 inning, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks and a K.

The 7th was Joba’s. 1 IP, 0 r, 2 h, 0 walks and a K. Mark Prior won’t make the team, but will go to SWB. I fully believe (barring injury, and what with Prior’s history, it could happen) Mark Prior can help the Yankees this year. Prior pitched a scoreless 8th. 1 IP, 0 r, 0 H, 1 walk and a K.

Prior’s ERA for this spring? 1.17. Would you have thought that when the Yanks were criticized for signing him?

Austin Krum got an RBI single in the 8th. Luis Ayala finished up, 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks and a k.

Swisher had two hits. New Yankee Chris Dickerson went 3 for 3 with an RBI.

Although not officially announced, Gustavo Molina will make the team as the backup catcher until Cervelli returns. Montero and Romine will go back to the minors for a while. Molina is just 1 for 16 in S.T. He is a .235 minor league hitter who is 5 for 41 in his MLB career. Don’t expect anything offensively. He’ll be there to call a game and play defense (his minor league CS pct. is around 39% from details available). I’d be shocked if he hits over the Mendoza line. But for four weeks and maybe eight games, it’ll be Molina backing up Martin.

  1. Will “the thrill” was no slouch!

  2. Looking at what that Belt did in the minors last year, he may not be one either.
