You win some, you lose some. Chase Whitley came up from the minors today to provide the rotation an extra day off. The way things have worked out, maybe he came up to be PART of the rotation for the next couple of weeks.
For the Yanks put Masahiro Tanaka on the 15-day DL today with a strained forearm and tendonitis in his wrist. You have to wonder if this is an aftereffect of trying to take strain off of that partially torn ligament in his pitching elbow. Expect him to miss a month, so we are talking Memorial Day, here.
Whitley was effective tonight, if not efficient. He gave up just one run in 5 IP, but had to be pulled because of the pitch count. 93 pitches in 5 IP, 1 R, 6 H, 1 walk and 5 K. The win, ERA 1.80. But with what I wrote earlier, he may need to stick around. Update: He will be sticking in the rotation with Tanaka out. Because of the DL of Tanaka, Petit can be brought back earlier than usual. (He was sent down for Whitley).
Which means with Tanaka out, CC Sabathia, with an 0-4 record and an ERA near 6.00, better pick it up.
The Yanks used their speed tonight, esp. from Ellsbury and Gardner, to get the win, along with clutch hitting by Brian McCann. They scored two in the first.
Ellsbury singled, stole second (6, he would get another SB later; he was 3 for 4 with 2 SB), advanced to third on an error and scored on an RBI groundout by Gardner. Later in the inning, Teix and McCann had back-to-back doubles to make it 2-0 Yanks. McCann wound up with 2 hits and 3 RBI.
Whitley stumbled in the third, giving up a run to cut it to 2-1.
In the fifth, with one out, Ellsbury singled and Gardner singled him to third. Gardner stole second (6) to avoid the DP. After Teix struck out, McCann doubled in two to make it 4-1.
In the top of the sixth, with Whitley out, Shreve came in and he didn’t have it. Walk, Triple to make it 4-2. He then got a big out with a K. Rogers, who was a star tonight, got a K and a ground out to keep it 4-2.
Shreve 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 h, 1 walk and 1 K. 2.25.
Rogers 2 2/3 IP. 0R, 1 H, 1 walk and 5K. GREAT job, and it let Betances and Miller each get a day of rest. 2.35. Huge outing.
Martin (S, 1). 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 2.70.
The win puts the Yanks at 13-8 and with a 2-game lead in the AL East.
A sad situation in Baltimore. Riots forced fans to stay in their seats the other night because of riots in Baltimore. Games were ppd. last night and tonight. The game Wed. afternoon will be played in front of NOBODY because of the riots. Baltimore’s weekend games against the Rays will be move to Tampa Bay — with the Orioles as the HOME team —- because of what is going on. Sad.
