Chase Whitley entered Saturday afternoon’s game with an ERA of 0.75 after two starts. You knew the law of averages would catch up sometime and today it did.

Whitley gave up 3 HR in a 6-2 Yankees loss. Alex Rodriguez sat out the game with tightness in his almost 40-year-old legs.

Whitley gave up a solo HR in the third, then in the fourth a solo HR, HBP and two-run homer doomed him.

The Yanks got their runs on a fifth inning SF by John Ryan Murphy and an 8th inning single by Carlos Beltran. The Yanks went down 10x today by strikeout.

Rookie Jose Pirela had two hits, making him 4 for 11 since his callup.

Whitley 5 2/3, 5 R, 6 h, 2 walks and 5 K. (L, 1-1, 3.06)
Carpenter 1 1/3, 1 R, 2 H, 0 walks and 2 K. 5.40
Shreve 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks and 2 K.  2.19.

The Yanks DL’d Chris Martin (shoulder tendonitis) and brought up Brandon Pinder.
