For the second straight game, a Garrett Jones HR by the Yanks was the game-winner. They beat Seattle Wednesday 3-1 to go to 29-25 on the season. On course for 87-75. We await word on Tampa Bay’s game to see what kind of an AL East lead the Yanks will have. (Update: The Rays won, the Yanks’ lead is still one game).
More surprising was how well Masahiro Tanaka pitched in coming off the DL. Tanaka was on an 80-85 pitch limit. He went 7 innings and threw just 76 pitches.
He gave up just 1 R, 3 H, 0 walks and 9 K. 3-1, 2.76.
The guy flat out knows how to pitch. Now if only the Yanks can keep him healthy.
For in 25 starts in his MLB career, he is 16-6, 2.77.
The Yanks made a surprising move in getting Tanaka off of the DL. They DFA’d Carpenter.
Mark Teixeira homered in the second, #16 on the year, #379 for his career, tying a couple of other good first basemen, Tony Perez and Orlando Cepeda, on the all-time list.
Tanaka gave a run back in the third, and was saved from giving up another by LF Ramon Flores. Just called up a week ago, Flores is just 2-14 as a hitter but has thrown two runners out at the plate.
In the fourth, Jones hit his two-run HR (3) which was the game-winner.
After Tanaka left,
Capuano 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 h, 0 walks and 1 K. 6.23
Miller (17th save) 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 walk and 3 K. 1.08.
A-Rod was hitless, stuck at 2987.
Brian McCann was removed after his first at bat due to a sore foot,. MRI tomorrow.
The Yanks are off on Thursday.
