Game 89. Yanks edge M’s 4-3.

Alex Rodriguez broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the 7th with a HR (19, 673 career) and the Yanks beat Seattle 4-3 in their first game after the All-Star break. The hit, #3022 of his career, puts him one behind Lou Brock on the all-time list. The win puts the Yanks at 49-40 and 4 1/2 games in front in the AL East.

Chris Young opened the scoring in the bottom of the second. His 11th HR of the year put the Yanks up 1-0.

Kyle Seager hit two HRs off of Masahiro Tanaka tonight. His first tied the game in the third. After the Yanks went up 2-1 in the fourth on a Chase Headley single, Seager’s second HR of the game put the Mariners up 3-2 in the top of the fifth.

Brian McCann’s RBI single in the bottom of the fifth tied it up and set the stage for A-Rod’s GW HR in the seventh.

Before the game, the Yanks sent down Gregorio Petit and brought back Brendan Ryan, who was on rehab.

Tanaka (W, 6-3, 3.65) 7 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 2 walks and 7 K. Nice game except for Seager.

Betances 1 Ip, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks and 2 K. 1.50

Miller (19th save) 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 1.48.

Update: This is the most HR A-Rod has had in a season since he hit 30 in 2010.

Also, I remember on another blog, one poster who kept complaining that the Yanks didn’t keep Ichiro. He kept bitching and moaning about this forever. It seemed like every time he made a comment, it was about Ichiro. Well, the Yanks already had speedy hitting lefty outfielders in Gardner and Ellsbury, both of whom have more power than Ichiro, who is 41. He was complaining about the Yanks keeping Chris Young (who the Yanks kept for balance. The Yanks needed a righty hitting backup/platoon OF for balance, something Ichiro wouldn’t give, being a lefty hitter.) So, let’s compare where they are right now.

Ichiro. 84 g. 186 AB. More than I would have expected. .253-1-11. 7 of 11 in SB. OPS+ 67, 33% below league average. Only three XBH out of 47 hits.

Young: 82 games, some 214 AB. .252-11-27. 25 extra base hits. OPS+ around a 110.

A no-brainer. I hope the guy has finally shut up.
