The Yankees defeated the Baltimore Orioles last night, 3-2, and now have a 4 1/2 game lead in their division over Toronto. Tampa Bay and Baltimore are 5 back, Boston is 10 out. The Yanks are 51-41.
Brendan Ryan’s RBI double in the sixth broke open a 2-2 tie. Yankees relievers combined for 3 1/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Yanks struck first in the very first inning on a double by Ellsbury, a sac bunt by Gardner and a SF by A-Rod.
In the second, singles by McCann and Young were followed by a Headley double to make it 2-0. Even though the Yanks had second and third with no out, they couldn’t add on.
The Yanks were just 1 for 10 with RISP and left 10 on. When the Orioles tied it up in the top of the sixth, you wondered if those squandered chances would come back to haunt the Yanks. Thankfully, they did not.
In the bottom of the sixth, with two out, Didi Gregorius singled and Ryan doubled him home. The Yankees bullpen made it stand up.
Nathan Eovaldi had a one-hit shutout entering the sixth, before faltering.
