Ivan Nova was cruising along into the sixth inning with a two-hit shutout, but he was getting no support from his teammates, who got three hits all day. Then in the space of four batters, he lost it and the Yankees lost the game 6-0 to the Toronto Blue Jays.
With one out in the sixth, Nova gave up a walk, single and walk. Those were his only two walks of the game. Manager Joe Girardi seemed to want to pull him then but left him in.
Mistake. Grand slam. It looked worse when Adam Warren came in after the grand slam and struck out the two batters he faced.
It may have made no difference anyway. The suddenly cold Yankees bats managed just three hits and have scored just four runs in their last four games.
With the loss, the Yanks drop to 61-48 and their lead over Toronto was shaved to 2 1/2 games. It is five over Baltimore.
Bryan Mitchell gave up a HR in the seventh and Toronto tacked on an unearned run in the eighth.
Nova (L, 4-4, 3.52) 5 1/3 IP, 4 R, 4 H, 2 walks, 6 K.
Warren 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 2 K. 3.38
