The Yankees were edged by Boston last night 4-3 and failed to gain ground on Toronto, who lost to Cleveland. The 72-58 Yanks remain 1 1/2 behind the Blue Jays as we head into September. The Yanks still have a comfortable lead for the wild card.

After scoring 15 Friday against the Braves and 20 Sunday against the Braves, the Yanks stranded 14. They just couldn’t get the big hit.

Didi Gregorius’ bases-loaded drive with two out in the top of the ninth fell just short, and was caught on the warning track. Prior to making the last out, Didi had gone 4 for 4. He has raised his batting average to .269.

The Yanks stranded 14 in the game. They had their chances. In the first, they loaded the bases with one out but got only one run out of it on a Carlos Beltran SF.

Mookie Betts hit a 2-run HR for Boston in the third to put them up 2-1.

In the fourth, the Yanks once again loaded the bases with no one out and got just one run out of it on a Didi Gregorius’ single. The inning ended when Greg Bird was thrown out at the plate trying to score on an Ellsbury line out to left. Bad send by the third base coach? Bird was out by plenty.

Ivan Nova gave up a HR to Yankee killer David Ortiz (#495 of his career) in the bottom of the fourth to make it 3-2 Boston. I have said this time and time again. How come no one dusts Ortiz off? They let him dig in. Think Gibson or Drysdale back in the day would let him dig in? No. They would have dusted him off the plate. I NEVER see any pitcher dust him off. Why not? Grow a pair and dust him off. It’s called pitching. It’s part of the game. Not headhunting, I don’t go for that, but aim one at his front hip. Make him move. No one ever does that. Yes, it bothers me. Pitchers need to grow a pair. Establish that inside corner and back him off. Heck Ortiz just missed a second HR off of Nova later in the game.

The Yanks had bases loaded, two out in the fifth. Bird struck out. A-Rod stranded two in the sixth.

Boston tacked on a run in the seventh to make it 4-2.

1st and 3rd, one out in the 8th, Ellsbury GIDP.

In the ninth, Drew singled and A-Rod walked. Murphy PR for Alex. Beltran struck out. McCann walked to load the bases with one out. Headley walked to force in a run and make it 4-3, bases loaded, one out. Bird struck out, then Didi hit the long flyout to end the game. In Yankee Stadium, it’s a grand slam. In Fenway, wrong part of the ballpark.

Nova (L, 5-7, 4.50) 6 IP, 3R, 7 H, 1 walk and 3 K.
Warren 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 3.26
Shreve 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 walks and 1 K. 1.89.

Teixeira won’t be with the team in Boston. He went back to NY for more tests on that bone bruise in his leg.

Today is September 1. We see who comes up now that rosters expand.
