Game 139. Yanks lose to Jays 11-5, fall 2 1/2 back. Teix’s leg is broken, out for year.

Before the game, the Yanks’ fears were confirmed. It isn’t a bone bruise that Mark Teixeira has, it’s a fractured shin. He’s done for the year.

As for the game, Luis Severino made his seventh MLB start and it turned out to be his first bad one. He gave up five runs in the first inning, two home runs, and was knocked out in the third as the Blue Jays won 11-5.

Toronto hit five HR in the game. The only bright spot for the Yanks was a 3-run HR (9) for Didi Gregorius, who drove in four of the Yanks five runs. Alex Rodriguez had the “Golden Sombrero”—0 for 4, 4 strikeouts.

Chris Martin was brought up before the game and wound up pitching in it.

Michael Pineda will start the opener of today’s DH, Ivan Nova the nightcap.

The loss dropped the Yanks 2 1/2 behind Toronto for the AL East lead. They are 77-62. The Yanks still have a 3 1/2 game lead for the first WC spot (meaning the one-game wild card playoff would be played at home) and a 4 1/2 game lead for the second wild card spot (game played on the road). The magic # to get into the wild card game is 19 over the Twins.

By the way, the Yanks “tragic number” to not win the AL East is 21. Hope they can win the division and it doesn’t come to that, but just saying. At least there is the wild card to fall back on.

Severino (L, 3-3, 3.35) 2 1/3 IP, 6 R, 6 H, 3 walks and 4 K.
Martin 1 2/3, 2 R, 3 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 6.11
Bailey 2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 6.75
Shreve 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H 0 walks and 0 K. 2.29
Cotham 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks and 2 K. 9.00
