Game 158. Yanks lose to Boston again, 9-5 in 11

I have to admit, I am concerned about how the Yanks are limping to the finish line.

They lost their third straight game to Boston, 9-5 in 11 innings, on Wednesday night.

Masahiro Tanaka, starting for the first time in twelve days because of that strained hammy, gave up a 3-run HR in the first inning.  He gave up 4 runs in 5 innings. Hopefully the rust after missing a start is off because he has to do better next time out in the wild card play-in game (should the Yanks make it into that game) or the Yanks will be going home and not advancing on to the divisional series round.

Earlier in the evening, Toronto clinched the AL East title.

The Yanks got a run back in the second on a Rob Refsnyder double. Boston went up 4-1 in the third.

The Yanks came all the way back but the bullpen couldn’t hold it. Outside of Wilson, Shreve, Betances and Miller, the Yanks have to find someone they could trust in the bullpen. And it appears that big four listed above is getting tired.

The Yanks got three in the fifth to tie it on an RBI double by Beltran, RBI groundout by McCann and an RBI single by Young.

A-Rod’s 33rd HR of the year (#687 career) put the Yanks up 5-4 in the sixth.

But Dellin Betances served up the first of Mookie Betts’ two homers of the game in the seventh to let Boston tie it up at five.

In the eleventh, Boston got four runs, capped off by Betts’ second HR of the game, and the Yanks lost 9-5.

The loss drops them to 86-72 and reduced their lead for WC #1 to 2 1/2. The magic number remains at 2.

There is a lot of rain in the forecast. Whether that means a later start, a doubleheader, rainouts, … we’ll see. Maybe the Yanks can clinch and not need to makeup the game. If so, maybe some extra rest will rejuvenate them.

It’s time to pick it up and find a second (or third, or fourth, or…) wind.
