In a rematch of last year’s wild card game, which the Yanks lost 3-0, Masahiro Tanaka battled CYA winner Dallas Keuchel to a standstill, but an error in the eighth by Dellin Betances led to three unearned runs and the Yanks lost their season opener to Houston, 5-3.
The Yanks struck first on a two-run double by Starlin Castro in the second, but they managed just four hits all day. Just like last year, they had trouble vs. Keuchel.
Tanaka gave up a run in the fourth and a HR to Houston’s hot new star, Correa, in the sixth, but he hung in there and pitched pretty decently.
But in the top of the eighth, Houston scored those three unearned runs. Manager Joe Girardi argued that Correa, who tapped the ball, was in the baseline, but the umpires didn’t rule that way. Betances air-mailed the ball over everyone’s head at first, a run scored on the play, two soon thereafter, and the Yanks were sunk.
They did get one run back in the bottom of the eighth on a HR by Didi Gregorius.
It was a cold day at the Stadium. The temps were in the low 40s.
Michael Pineda tries tomorrow night. If today was cold, what will tomorrow night be like?
