Game 13. Yanks still struggling, fall 5-2.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Maybe Joe Girardi needs to call a team meeting. For the Yanks are struggling right now, down to 5-8 after a 5-2 loss tonight.

In the first, the problems getting runners in resurfaced. (They were 0 for 4 w/RISP tonight and those numbers have been awful so far this season). The struggling Jacoby Ellsbury doubled, but the Yanks couldn’t bring him home. I have often said that I’d kill for a SF, but the Yanks don’t seem capable of that lately (and Girardi NEVER calls for a squeeze bunt, one of my gripes against Girardi. Be aggressive. Bunt. Steal. Squeeze. Hit and Run. Don’t just wait for a HR).

Didi Gregorius did get the Yanks on the board in the second with his 2nd HR of the year.

Eovaldi gave up 3 in the fourth, and it could have been another if not for Aaron Hicks gunning a runner out at home. If only Hicks were hitting. He is 1 for 20 for the season. You wonder if sending Hicks down and bringing Aaron Judge up may be a benefit.

Any chance of the Yanks getting back in it evaporated when Brandon Pinder gave up two in the eighth. Pinder replaced Olson, who replaced Cessa on the Scranton shuttle.

Carlos Beltran hit his 4th HR of the year, #396 of  his career (tying Joe Carter) in the bottom of the eighth.

Some numbers: Ellsbury is at .220. He has to improve and set the table. Since coming off the DL last year, Ellsbury has done nothing. Teix is at .182. He is notoriously a slow starter. A-Rod is at .163. Headley .182. Hicks .050.

It’s early, but those numbers have to improve.

Generally, I want a club to finish April at .500 or above. The Yanks are 5-8, so they have to get it going.

Eovaldi (L, 0-2, 6.11) 6 Ip, 3 R, 8 H, 1 walk and 7 K.
Yates 1 IP, 0 r, 0 H, 1 walk and 0 K. 4.15
Pinder 1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 walk and 1 K. 18.00
Nova 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks and 0 K. 6.00
