Things were going so nicely, then we fans had to go undergo a scare.
The Yanks built up a 7-0 lead, Ivan Nova was cruising, then the wheels fell off the wagon and Baltimore scored six in the seventh. But the Yanks held on, even getting an insurance run in the ninth, for an 8-6 win.
Earlier in the day, the Yanks had to put Mark Teixeira on the DL with torn cartillage in his knee. If Teix needs surgery, he is done for the year, and with him in the last year of his contract, his Yankees’ career could be over.
This may be a blessing in disguise. Even though the Yanks brought up Chris Parmalee from SWB, Rob Refsnyder made his first MLB start at 1B last night. He went 1 for 4 with an RBI double, and scored a run. Maybe it’s the break the kid needs. The Yanks can see what they have in him by giving him a good, long look. Let’s face it, he can’t do worse than the 0 HR, 4 RBI that Teix put up from April 13th until now.
As for next year when Greg Bird is due to return? We’ll cross that bridge when we get there.
The Yanks got a run in the third on a double by Headley, a deep fly by Refsnyder that moved Headley up, and a SF by Romine.
Four in the fourth made it 5-0. Castro doubled in one run after singles by Beltran and A-Rod. Gregorius RBI ground out made it 3-0, Refsnyder’s double made it 4-0, and Romine’s single made it 5-0. Romine is surprising me with his play so far this year.
Singles by Gardner, A-Rod (3 hits) and Castro made it 6-0 in the fifth. In the sixth, Ellsbury and Gardner pulled off a double steal—with Ellsbury stealing home—to made it 7-0, and Nova was cruising.
Then he ran out of gas in the seventh, giving up a leadoff HR to Mark Trumbo. Then came a single and a 2-run HR to Pedro Alvarez. Then a single and a walk. He was cooked. In came Nick Goody.
And there went a 3-run HR off Goody by Adam Jones. 7-0 became 7-6.
Andrew Miller came in to slam the door.
The Yanks got an insurance run in the ninth on a double by Hicks and a single by A-Rod. Chapman then closed out the game.
The Yanks are 26-29.
A-Rod and Castro had 3 hits each, with one RBI for A-Rod, 2 for Castro. Romine 2 RBI. 2 hits each for Ellsbury and Gardner.
Nova (w, 4-3, 4.41) 6 + IP, 5 R, 7 H, 2 walks, 6; K. Gave up 2 HR.
Goody 0 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 walks, 0 K. Faced one batter, gave up HR. 4.30
Miller (H, 8) 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 2 K. 1.14
Chapman (S, 9) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 walk, 1 K. 2.38
Were I to choose, Miller should be the Yanks’ rep in the All-Star game.
