Game 81. Teix gets HRs 400 & 401 in Yanks’ win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Well, the season is 1/2 over, and the Yanks are 40-41. The second half starts today, in Chicago vs. the White Sox, on Independence Day.

Mark Teixeira got his 400th and 401st career HRs in Sunday’s 6-3 win over San Diego, and starting pitcher Chad Green, in his second MLB start, let Kermit the Frog know that sometimes it IS easy being Green, since he pitched six strong innings for his first major league victory.

Green gave up a HR to ex-Yankee Yangervis Solarte in the second inning to tie the game after the Yanks scored in the top of the second, but that was the only blip he had in the game. He did pitch out of a jam in the fourth, also caused by Solarte.

The Yanks went up 2-1 in the fourth on Didi Gregorius’ 9th HR of the year.

A solo HR by Teixeira in the eighth put the Yanks up 3-1, and it was Teixeira’s 400th HR of his career. He became the fifth switch-hitter to hit 400, after Mickey Mantle (536), Eddie Murray (504), Chipper Jones (468) and Carlos Beltran (411 and counting).

The Yanks needed insurance runs, and got them in the top of the ninth on an RBI single by Gardner and Teixeira’s 2-run blast. Career HR #401 was Teix’s seventh HR of the season.

They needed those runs because Anthony Swarzak gave up a 2-run HR in the bottom of the ninth.

Green (1st MLB WIN. w, 1-1, 4.09) 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 walks, 8 K. Gave up 1 HR.
Betances (H, 20) 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 walks 2 K, 2.63
Miller (H, 13) 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 walk, 1 K. 1.47.
Swarzak 0 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 0 walks, 0 K. 5.40. Faced two batters, gave up 1 HR.
Chapman (S, 16) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 1 K. 2.86

Combined, Yankee pitchers struck out 12.
