Game 113. Sanchez’ first MLB HR keys Yanks’ 9-4 comeback win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Gary Sanchez hit his first MLB HR, and the Yanks erupted for five in the seventh and three in the eighth to beat Boston 9-4 Wednesday night. In so doing, they may have lost Nathan Eovaldi for the rest of the season. Eovaldi was pulled after one inning because of elbow discomfort.

The Yanks could bring back Severino, who they just sent down for Blake Parker, but I would do something else—bring up Dietrich Enns from SWB. Enns pitched and won for SWB last night, and the 25 yr. old lefty is 13-4 between AA/AAA this year (see my minors report for more). Why not?

Boston got a run off in the third, and another in the fourth as manager Joe Girardi had to exhaust the bullpen after Eovaldi’s early exit. The Yanks cut it to 2-1 in the fifth on Didi Gregorius’ 14th HR of the season. If I would have told you in spring training that Didi might hit 20 this year, you wouldn’t have believed it. I don’t believe it myself.

Tyler Clippard gave up a couple of runs in the sixth to make it 4-1 Red Sox, but then the Yanks exploded.

In the seventh, Didi, Sanchez and Romine all singled, with Romine’s single making it 4-2. A-Rod, pinch-hitting, flied out to RF to move Sanchez to third. Gardner struck out, but Ellsbury’s single made it 4-3.  Headley singled to tie the game, and  Teixeira walked to load the bases. Castro’s double made it 6-4, Yankees. Didi popped up to end the inning as the Yanks batted around.

In the eighth, Sanchez led off the inning with his first MLB HR, a bomb to center field. Sanchez was 4 for 5 in the game. Romine walked. After Refsnyder singled, a WP moved up the runners. Gardner flied out, but Ellsbury walked to load the bases. Two more wild pitches scored two more runs to make it 9-4.
