Game 121. Yanks shutout Angels 7-0 behind Tanaka & 4 HR.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Ronald Torreyes went 4 for 4 including his first MLB HR,  Gary Sanchez had 3 hits, and the Yankees rode 4 HR and Masahiro Tanaka to a 7-0 win over the Angels on Friday night.

Jacoby Ellsbury gave Tanaka the only run he needed by leading off the game with a HR (5).

An RBI single by Ellsbury drove in Torreyes in the third to make it 2-0, Yanks.

The Yanks then hit 3 HR in the fifth to break the game open. Torreyes started it with his first MLB HR. Two batters later, Didi Gregorius HR’d (17, and you are lying if you thought back in March that Didi might hit 20), and two batters later, Brian McCann hit his 16th HR of the season.

In the sixth, Torreyes singled in a run, and Didi doubled in Torreyes for the final tally of 7-0.

Earlier in the day, Nathan Eovaldi had successful surgeries on his elbow.

Gary Sanchez singled the first time up, doubled the second time up and doubled the third time up. On that third at bat, he was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.

Just a hunch. With Eovaldi out for 2017 (and maybe forever?), my gut says that McCann and/or Gardner could be trade bait this offseason to try and get some pitching. The free agent market is very barren this year, and trading one of them, especially if a youngster is ready, as Sanchez is now, may be what it takes to fortify the rotation, especially with Eovaldi out.

Tanaka (w, 10-4, 3.24) 7 2/3 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 0 walks, 9 K.
Layne 0 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 walk, 0 K. 3.82 (Bos/NYY). Faced one batter, walked him.
Warren 1/3 IP, 0 r, 0 H, 0 walks, 1 K. 5.21 (Cubs/NYY)0
Yates 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks, 0 K. 5.34.

BTW, in terms of WAR (wins above replacement), the best player on the Yanks this year has been Tanaka.
