S.T. Game 11. Yanks edge Pirates, 3-2.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

I don’t know why anyone tries to run on Gary Sanchez. It seems every game he is playing this spring training, he is throwing out one or two runners. He threw two more out today. What’s that 5 or 6 in spring training this year so far? It’s just 11 games, and he hasn’t even played in each one of them.

Austin Romine also gunned out a runner trying to steal.

The Yanks edged Pittsburgh, 3-2, to improve to 9-2 in the exhibition season. Masahiro Tanaka pitched three scoreless innings.

Matt Holliday had two doubles and Gleyber Torres tripled.

Pete Kozma went 2 for 2 with an RBI.

In the fourth, Holliday doubled, and Chris Carter got an infield single, Holliday moving up on an error. Aaron Judge walked and Holliday scored on a WP.

After the Pirates tied it in the top of the seventh, the Yanks went ahead 2-1 in the bottom of the seventh when Ji-Man Choi was HBP and Wilkin Castillo ran for him. Kozma singled and then a WP and error enabled Castillo to score.

In the eighth, the Yanks went up 3-1 on singles by Sanchez, Clint Frazier and Kozma.

The Pirates got an unearned run in the top of the ninth because of a three-base error by Dustin Fowler.

Tanaka 3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 walks, 4 K.
Layne 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks, 0 K.
Chapman (H) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 1 K.
Clippard (H) 1 Ip, 0 R, 1 h, 0 walks, 1 K.
Adams (BS, W) 1 Ip, 1 R, 1 H, 2 walks, 1 K.
Cessa (S) 2 IP, 1 R (UNEARNED), 2 H, 0 walks, 2 K.

UPDATE: To be fair to Fowler, Clint Frazier went for a diving catch which forced the three-base error charged to Fowler.

Also, reports are that Rob Refsnyder is on the trading block.
