Down 4-1 after two innings, the Yanks came back to beat Toronto 11-5 to improve their spring record to 16-5.
The Yanks hit four HR in the win. Aaron Hicks, Starlin Castro, Rob Refsnyder and Clint Frazier all homered.
Hicks had 2 hits, Frazier 2 hits and 2 RBI. 2 hits for Ronald Torreyes. 2 hits for Castro. Ji-Man Choi had 2 RBI. Mason Williams had 2 RBI.
The day was not a good day for Luis Cessa who had a rough outing and appears to be AAA bound after that.
If I were to guess, Adam Warren will be a long man out of the bullpen (not that he can’t start or deserves a starting position, but he’s too valuable in the bullpen) and that the two rotation spots are between Mitchell, Green and Severino.
James Kaprielian had his first and only outing of the spring. The Yanks are bringing him along slowly after his injury last year. He and Mason Williams, who missed most of spring training with a knee problem, were sent down to minor league camp after today’s game.
The Yanks signed reliever Ernesto Frieri. He hasn’t pitched in the majors since 2015. Frieri saved 23 games between the Padres and Angels in 2012 and 37 games for the Angels in 2013. A gamble… since 2013 he is 2-4, 13 saves, 6.37 ERA. For his career, 11-13, 3.55 ERA+ 105, 73 saves. The righty is 31.
Bryan Mitchell was impressive again.
Cessa 1 2/3 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 1 walk, 2 K.
Heller 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 walk, 2 K.
Mitchell 3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 walk, 5 k.
Kaprielian 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 walk, 3 K.
Graham 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 3 K.
