Michael Pineda pitched 6 1/3 strong innings, and the Yanks rode 3 HRs to a 4-2 win over KC on Monday night.
The win puts the Yanks at 26-16 and opened up a 1 1/2 game lead in the AL East.
Pineda gave up two runs in the top of the third, one via a HR, but Brett Gardner sliced KC’s lead to 2-1 with his ninth HR of the season in the bottom of the third.
Gardner didn’t get his first RBI of the season until April 29, when he had 2 HR and 4 RBI in that game. He went into that game at .188-0-0. Since then he has gone .354-9-19.
Didi Gregorius hit a 2-run HR (2) in the fourth to put the Yanks up 3-2. Didi had 2 hits.
Chris Carter added an insurance run with a solo HR (3) in the seventh.
Matt Holliday had 2 hits.
The Yanks took a small section of RF, added mahogany wood, made it look like a small jury box, and have renamed it “The Judge’s Chambers.” Cool.
Pineda (w, 5-2, 3.35) 6 1/3 IP, 2 R, 6 H, 1 W, 6 K. Gave up 1 HR.
Warren (H, 3) 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K. 2.25
Clippard (H, 5) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K. 1.37
Betances (S, 3) 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 k. 0.61
With Gleyber Torres’ promotion from AA to AAA, you wonder how fast he may be coming to the majors, and also where the SS would play. He has been getting time at 2B and 3B. We’ll see if he gets more reps at 3B at SWB, because while Didi is hitting .333 and Castro .335, Headley has gone .163-1-16 since April 18, and his defense has been shaky, too. Just saying, but it’ll be interesting to see how many games at 3B Torres gets at SWB.
