I am up at the game today, and I see Aaron Judge hit his first career grand slam in a 9-5 Yankees win that puts them at 29-18 for the year.
With Baltimore, Boston and Toronto losing, a good day (the Rays won).
In the top of the second, Pineda gave up two runs, and it may have been more except that on the hit that scored the two runs, the Yanks won a challenge call, and Ryon Healy wound up with a two-run single instead of a double. Gardner gunned him down trying for two.
In the bottom of the inning, Castro singled, and after Judge lined out, Didi singled putting Castro at third, Didi moving up on the throw. A SF by Hicks cut the lead to 2-1.
In the bottom of the third, the Yanks got a break when Oakland’s RF, Matt Joyce, made an error that enabled the bases to be loaded with one out. After Castro struck out, Judge hit a bullet to the opposite field for a grand slam. HR (or is it verdict?) went to the jury for his 16th verdict, and the first time ever, to the GRAND jury. 5-2 Yanks.
In the fourth, Hicks singled, stole second and went to third on a throwing error on the play and Carter hit a SF. 6-2.
An error by Pineda cut the Yanks’ lead to 6-3 in the sixth.
In the bottom of the seventh, Torreyes singled and scored on a two-out double by Sanchez. At first, it appeared that A’s LF Khris Davis made a diving catch, but the ball came out. 7-3 Yanks.
Chad Green gave up a 2-run HR to Davis in the eighth, but Brett Gardner blooped a double with the bases loaded for 2 runs to make it 9-5, the final score.
Sanchez 2 hits, RBI. Judge 2 hits, 4 RBI (the grand slam). Torreyes 2 hits. Gardner 2 RBI.
Pineda (W, 6-2, 3.32) 6 Ip, 3 R, 2 ER, 3 h, 3 W, 5 K.
Green (H, 2) 1 1/3 IP, 2 R, 1 H, 2 W, 2 K. 1 HBP. Gave up 1 HR. 1.69
