Jacob Ruppert, the Yanks’ owner in the 1920s and 1930s, said that an enjoyable day to him was seeing the Yankees score seven runs in the first inning and gradually pull away.
He would have loved last night.
The Yanks scored six runs in the first inning, hit five home runs in the game, got an outstanding performance from Luis Severino, and crushed Baltimore 16-3.
The win puts the Yanks at 36-23 on the season.
Rookie Domingo German starts Sunday as Masahiro Tanaka is pushed back a day.
Correction: German was brought up, but Chad Green got the start.
The Yanks blew the game open right away in the bottom of the first. With two out, Aaron Judge homered (19) and what a laser shot it was. It set the statcast record for the highest exit velocity off the bat EVER at 121.1 MPH. I pray he never hits one like that directly back at the pitcher. That would be scary.
After a single by Holliday and a double by Castro, Sanchez singled in two runs and Didi Gregorius hit a 2-run HR (6) to make it 5-0. Chase Headley walked, went to second on a WP and scored on a single by Chris Carter.
In the second, Aaron Judge and Matt Holliday walked, and manager Joe Girardi gave Starlin Castro the green light on a 3-0 count. It paid off as Castro crushed a 3-run HR (11) to make it 9-0.
To the fourth. Hicks walked, Judge singled and Holliday tied his “bald brother”, Brett Gardner, in their friendly competition, by crushing his 13th HR of the season, a 3-run shot. 12-0.
Meanwhile, Severino retired the first 12 batters he faced.
To the fifth. Gardner singles, Hicks doubles. Judge doubles in two. 14-0.
Things got a little sloppy after that. Severino made his only mistake of the night in a brilliant performance, giving up a solo HR in the seventh.
Giovanny Gallegos gave up a solo HR in the eighth. 14-2.
Gary Sanchez hit a 2-run HR in the bottom of the eighth to make it 16-2 Yanks.
Tommy Layne finished up but not before giving up a run.
