Game 86. Yanks go 1 for 16 w/RISP in 5-3 loss.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

You have to take advantage of your opportunities, and the Yankees didn’t, going 1 for 16 w/RISP in a 5-3 loss to the Brewers on Sunday.

The Yanks hit the All Star Break at 45-41, and fall into a virtual tie for second place in the AL East with the Tampa Bay Rays. They won’t play again until Friday, when they are in Boston for a big series against the first place Red Sox.

They need this time to regroup. After a 21-9 start, they have gone 24-32. Some changes will have to be made, some may be via a trade before the trade deadline in a few weeks, some will be when injured people like Holliday and Castro come back soon, and others will be by managerial decisions.

The Yanks have to take this time off to reassess and change so they reverse the negative skid they are currently on. Right the ship.

Masahiro Tanaka started and had a bad game, giving up a 3-run HR in the first and a solo HR in the second. 4-0 Brewers right away.

The Yanks cut it to 4-3 in the fourth on an RBI single by Chase Headley and a 2-run HR (3) by Clint Frazier.

The Brewers got an insurance run in the fifth which was the end of the scoring. Headley just missed a 3-run HR late in the game which would have given the Yanks the lead. It was just foul.

Tanaka (L, 7-8, 5.47) 4 1/3 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 1 W, 5 K. Gave up 2 HR.
Shreve 0 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 0 K. 2.96. Faced one batter, gave up a hit, Tanaka’s runner he left behind scored.
Warren 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 3 K. 2.02
Webb 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H. 0 W, 0 K. 4.50
Green 2 iP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 4 K. 1.91. Did hit a batter.
Chapman 1 Ip, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 1 K. 3.48.

Some thoughts. Green has been great. After the All Star break, I would have him take Clippard’s role and reduce Clippard (if he isn’t traded).

The Yanks really have to reassess Ellsbury and Headley. It would be a lot of $$ to eat if they have to trade or release them. But neither are giving the Yanks much right now.

There are trade rumors right now regarding Brad Hand (lefty reliever) for SD and Justin Bour, lefty hitting 1B from the Marlins. Both would be excellent acquisitions but it depends on what the Yanks would have to give up to get these players.

I am worried about Tyler Wade. It seems like he isn’t “ready for prime time.” I am not saying give up on him, but it appears he may need more time in the minors. He is just 3 for 28 so far.

Just saying. Some changes will be made. We’ll see what they will be.
