Game 158. Yanks beat Rays, 6-1.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Before the recap, some observations.

With that sweet, made for Yankee Stadium’s RF porch swing, if the Yanks can get Greg Bird going, it makes the Yanks that much more dangerous. What a spring training he had before getting hurt right before Opening Day. That really set him back. It showed. That 6 for 60 isn’t him. It looks like he is getting back to what we and the Yanks expected from him, and another HR tonight. How sweet it is getting him back to normal, and now.

His lefty swing, coupled with Judge and Sanchez’ righty bats, then, Castro righty, Didi lefty, Gardner lefty, Todd or Clint Frazier righty, switch-hitters Headley and Hicks, Lefty Ellsbury, righty Holliday? Balance.

Secondly, Luis Severino tonight looked like the the Severino we want to see next Tuesday night in the wild card game. 6 innings, 1 R, 4 H, 9 K. We will gladly take that next Tuesday against the Twins (as long as the Yanks don’t get shut out).

The only mistake Seve made was in giving up a HR in the top of the fifth. But the Yanks came right back in the bottom of the fifth on a 2-run double by Aaron Judge.

They put the game away with four runs, on three HR, in the sixth. Castro hit an absolute bomb (16) to put the Yanks up 3-1. Bird immediately followed with #8, 4-1. Headley singled, and after a groundout, Hicks hit #14 to make it 6-1.

Gardner 2 hits.
Judge double, 2 walks, 2 RBI.
Castro HR
Bird HR
Headley 2 hits.
Hicks, 2 hits, HR,  2 RBI.

Severino (W, 14-6, 2.98) 6 Ip, 1 R, 4 H, 1 W, 9 K. Gave up 1 HR. Last reg. season start.
Shreve 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 1 K. 3.65
Green 1/3 IP 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K. 1.86
Betances 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K. 2.87
Chapman 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K. 3.35.

The win puts the Yanks at 89-69, but Boston won so the Yanks are 3 behind Boston with 4 to go. Not mathematically eliminated from the wild card, but ….. looks like the wild card.
