Tito Francona, the father of Indians’ manager Terry Francona, has died at the age of 84.

Francona, an OF/1B who threw and batted lefty, played for the Orioles (1956-1957), White Sox (1958), Tigers (1958), Indians (1959-1964), Cardinals (1956-1966), Phillies (1967), Braves (1967-1969), A’s (1969-1970) and finished with the 1970 Brewers.

He finished in a tie for runnerup for the 1956 ROY, when he hit .258-9-57-11 SB, OPS+95.

He finished fifth in MVP voting in 1959, hitting .363-20-79, OPS+ 171. He was 34 at bats short of qualifying and winning the batting title.

He led the league in doubles in 1960 (292-17-79, OPS+ 127), and was an All-Star in 1961 when he hit .301-16-85, OPS+ 122.

He hit .318 with an OPS+ of 140 (100 is average) as a backup in 1969.

He hit .272 with 125 HR. His 162 g. average was .272-12-62, OPS+ 107.
