Game 124. Bird slams Jays, but Didi hurt in Yanks’ 10-2 win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

For the first time since the Yanks finished 97-65 in 2011, the Yanks are 32 games above .500 since the win today puts them at 78-46. Since Boston lost, the deficit in the AL East is 9 1/2. They are 4 games up for the top wild card spot.

The Yanks head to Miami. They are off on Monday.

The win could be costly, however. Didi Gregorius, in beating out an RBI single in the first inning, bruised a heel while running into the first baseman, and it could put him on the DL.

J.A. Happ gave up a HR in the top of the first, but the Yanks came back with six runs before making an out.

Hicks and Stanton walked, then they executed a double steal. Andujar (red/hot) singled in one run. Didi singled in another but got hurt on the play. Torres got an infield single that loaded the bases.

Bird then hit a grand slam (HR #11) to make it 6-0.

Ronald Torreyes replaced Didi, going to 2B while Torres shifted over to SS. Torreyes, off the bench, got 3 hits in the game.

Happ gave up another HR in the sixth which made it 6-2, but the Yanks got four in the bottom half of the inning for the final of 10-2.

Gardner singled and Hicks walked. Stanton singled in one run. Andujar got an RBI on a forceout. Torreyes doubled, and Torres was intentionally walked to load the bases. After Bird grounded into a force at home, Higashioka singled in two runs.

Andujar 2 RBI
Bird, grand slam, 4 RBI
Higashioka 2 RBI
Torreyes 3 hits
Torres 2 hits

What a pickup Happ has been. 4 starts, 4-0 as a Yankee.
