Game 142. Romine’s HR Key Blow As Yanks Hold On to Win , 4-2.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Austin Romine became the tenth Yankee to hit double figures in HR this season as his seventh inning HR was the game winning hit as the 89-53 Yankees beat Seattle 4-2 Saturday night.

With 20 games left in the season, the Yanks are 7 1/2 back of Boston. The tragic # remains 13 for Boston winning the AL East, but the Yanks did stay 3 1/2 ahead of the A’s for the top wild card spot. The Yanks’ magic # there is 17. The magic # to make the playoffs for the Yanks is 10 (over Seattle and also Tampa Bay).

Andrew McCutchen led off the game with a HR, his second as a Yankee and 17th of the season.

Lance Lynn gave up a HR in the bottom of the third which tied the game for Seattle.

In the fifth, Brett Gardner walked and stole second. McCutchen walked and both runners moved up on a PB. Giancarlo Stanton’s SF made it 2-1 Yanks, but Seattle tied the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Romine’s 10th HR of the season made it 3-2 Yanks in the seventh. Neil Walker (9) and Luke Voit (7 as a Yankee) could still join that double-digit HR club this season.

The Yankees have 232 HR as a team with 20 games to go. They need 23 in those 20 games to break the team record of 264 in a season set by the 1997 Seattle Mariners.

The Yanks got an insurance run in the ninth when Miguel Andujar was HBP and Adeiny Hechevarria, in for Didi, singled PR Tyler Wade to third. Wade scored on a SF by Gleyber Torres.

Things got hairy in the bottom of the ninth, when Dellin Betances gave up a hit, HBP and walk and Seattle had the bases loaded with one out. He got out of it with a couple of strikeouts as  he did strike out the side.

Having Betances close the game instead of, say, Britton or Robertson raises eyebrows. In his MLB career, Betances has a 1.04 ERA in the sixth, 1.80 ERA in the seventh, 2.05 ERA in the eighth, but a 3.73 ERA in the ninth.

Of course, Chapman is out and it’s possible he’s done for the season.
