The Yankees (43-27) beat the Chicago White Sox 10-3 on Sunday, and it’s funny, because some players expected to get less playing time what with the acquisition of Encarnacion, as well as the arrivals off the DL (I still call it the DL) of Stanton (Tuesday) and Judge (soon) are the ones who performed well today.
The Yanks kept their 1/2 game lead over the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East. They now have three games at home vs. the Rays, followed by four at home vs. the Houston Astros. This will be a tough and interesting week.
After the game, the Yanks sent Clint Frazier down to the minors to make room for Encarnacion. A tough call, since Frazier is hitting .283 with 11 HR. Of course his defense hPaas been brutal.
As much as I like the kid’s bat, I feel as if Frazier going down isn’t only so he can play every day. I also feel that he soon is going to be the centerpiece in a major trade in which the Yanks acquire a top-notch starter. Just a gut feeling, but I feel the Encarnacion pickup is kind of like a chess move, where you make one major move before the one that becomes checkmate.
As for the game, nice to see a decent outing from James Paxton, who was struggling a bit lately.
He did give up a first inning HR, but the Yanks bounced back with five in the third to go up 5-1.
Cameron Maybin, who will see less playing time or maybe even be let go when Judge and Stanton come back, led off the third with a single but was caught stealing. D.J. LeMahieu then singled and Luke Voit walked. Gleyber Torres walked to load the bases. After Frazier flied out, advancing no one, Brett Gardner (another who will see less time) drove in two with a single, Gio Urshela (yet another) singled in a run, and then Mike Tauchman walked to reload the bases. Austin Romine (who came into the game hitting just .194) singled in two runs to make it 5-1.
The Yanks got two in the fifth. Gardner was HBP and Urshela doubled him to third. After an out, Romine doubled in two runs to make it 7-1, Yankees. Chicago scored in the bottom of the fifth to cut it to 7-2.
With one out in the sixth, Torres walked, Frazier singled him to third, and Gardner drove in Torres with an RBI forceout. 8-2.
Maybin hit a solo HR (3) in the seventh to make it 9-2.
A single by Torres, groundout by Frazier that moved the runner up, and RBI single by Gardner made in 10-2 in the eighth.
The White Sox got a run in the eighth, 10-3, the final score.
