Ex-Met C Stearns, a 4x All-Star, dies at age 71.

John Stearns, who bridged the gap between Jerry Grote and Gary Carter as Mets’ catcher, passed away at the age of 71.

Stearns was a 4x all-star, who had decent speed for a catcher. He played in one game for the Phillies in 1974 before spending the rest of his career with the Mets (1975-1984).

He only played in 100 or more games in a season three times, from 1977-1979 before injuries prematurely ended his career. After he turned 31, he only played in 12 more MLB games.

He stole 25 bases in 1978, 15 in 1979, 12 (in only 80 games) in 1981 and 17 (in only 98 games) in 1982.

His 162-game average was .260-9-62 with 18 SB. His OPS+ was 102.

He was an All-Star in 1977, 1979, 1980 and 1982.
