Two unanimous CYA winners first time since 1968. Cortes 8th, Cole 9th. MVPs announced tonight.

For the first time since 1968 (Gibson and McLain) both CYA winners were unanimous winners of the award.

In the NL Sandy Alcantara became the first Marlin to cop the honor.

In the AL Justin Verlander won his third CYA, adding to his HOF resume. For Verlander, very impressive given his age (39) and coming off TJ surgery.

The Yankees’ Nestor Cortes got three fifth-place votes and finished eighth in the voting. Gerrit Cole got one fifth place vote and finished ninth. We keep wondering when Cole might win the award himself. He has finished second twice, losing out to Verlander in 2019.

The MVP awards will be announced tonight and here is hoping Aaron Judge beats out Shohei Ohtani for the award.

Yanks deal for Cubs’ Rizzo

After adding OF Joey Gallo in a deal, the Yanks (53-48, 3rd, 8 1/2 back, 3 1/2 out of a playoff spot) now add 1B Anthony Rizzo from the Cubs for two minor leaguers. Unlike Gallo, who is under contract through 2022, Rizzo could just be a rental. He is a free agent at the end of the season.

Rizzo, 32 soon, joins Gallo as another lefty bat in the lineup to give the lineup more balance. He, like Gallo, also improves the defense. What this will mean for Luke Voit, we’ll see. The trade deadline is 4 PM today.

Rizzo is a 3x All-Star with 4 Gold Gloves who won a WS ring with the 2016 Cubs. He has gotten MVP consideration 5x in his career, finishing in the top 10 3x. He has topped 30 HR 3x and 100 RBI 4x. This season, he is hitting .248-14-40, OPS+ 115. For his career, his 162 game average is .269-29-95, OPS+ 128. Padres 2011, Cubs 2012-2021.

To get him the Yanks gave up:

#9 prospect Alexander Vizcaino, 24, who has only pitched 6 total innings this year, 0-1, 9.00. Minor league stats, 12-21, 4.95.

#12 prospect Kevin Alcantara, 19. CF. Hasn’t played above rookie league, and I guess the presence of Jasson Dominguez made Alcantara expendable. 49 minor league games (41 at age 16!) .269-2-22.
