A couple prospects (in bold) get to show their stuff today.
For all those wanting to write in the Phils for 110 or more wins (and believe me, I’ve heard it), there may be some trouble in paradise. Their top prospect, OF Domonic Brown, started S.T. 0 for 15 with 9 strikeouts and know is out with a broken hammate bone in his right hand. Meanwhile, 2B Chase Utley hasn’t played at all yet due to patellar tendonitis. He just received a cortisone shot.
Updates: Hughes has the same second outing blues that CC had. 3 IP, 3 R (2 HR), 5 H, 0 walks and 2 K. Yanks got back to back doubles by Cano and Andruw Jones, Jones later scored on a SF. After 3, Yanks down 3-2 to Houston.
Steve Garrison goes 3, 1 R, 3 H, 1 walk, 0 K. A long-shot to make team. A-Rod hit 2-run HR in 5th. Golson a solo shot in 6th. Brad Suttle RBI single in 6th. In 7th, Singles by scrubs Parraz and Maxwell, double(?) by Brewer but Parraz thrown out at home. Austin Krum SF and a Nunez double plate two more. 8-4 Yanks after 6 1/2. Brian Anderson in to pitch.
Here is an example of why you can’t take S.T. wins and losses too seriously. Anderson is an ex-MLB OF, trying to make it back as a pitcher. He didn’t do well in his prior spring training outing and failed again today. 2/3 of an inning. 3 R on 5 hits. No walks or K’s. It’s why you have to look past the score to see the real story of the spring training games. Eric Wordekemper had to get the last out in the 7th. After 7, 8-7 Yankees.
Dave Phelps gives up the tying run on a walk and 2 doubles. It would have been worse, but after the walk, he picked the runner off. 8-8 going into the 9th.
Of course, just Spring Training, and we haven’t seen Soriano and/or Rivera yet.
3 singles and an error give the Yanks two runs in the top of the 9th. 10-8 Yankees. Going into the bottom of the 9th, there have been 36 hits in this game, 21 by the Yankees.
Interesting ending. Dave Phelps (2 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 1 walk, 2 K) got a ground out, then gave up back-to-back singles. Then he committed a balk. 2nd and 3rd. One out. Tying run on second. He rebounded with two strikeouts to end the game. The last batter? Koby Clemens, Roger’s boy. 38 hits in the game. 21 for the Yankees. Yanks win 10-8, now 3-5-1 in S.T. ; Tomorrow there are two games. Split squads.
