Game 84. Yanks carry Tanaka to 7-4 win.

This year, Masahiro Tanaka has carried the Yankees. In his last start, he lost a 2-1 heartbreaker to Boston.

It was time for the Yankees’ offense to return the favor.

Last night was the first night Tanaka didn’t get a “quality start”, after 16 consecutive quality starts to begin his MLB career.

Tanaka had his worst start as a Yankee, going 7 innings, giving up 4 R on 9 H, 0 walks and just 3 K. He improved his record to 12-3, and his ERA went up to 2.27.

Down 2-0 in the fifth, Carlos Beltran hit a 3-run HR (9) to give the Yanks the lead. It was the 367th HR of Beltran’s career. After an out, Zelous Wheeler, just called up from SWB, hit a HR in his second MLB at bat to put the Yanks up 4-2.

Tanaka gave up a run in the sixth before the Yanks gave him a cushion by scoring three times in the seventh. Ichiro walked, Wheeler singled, and Brendan Ryan doubled home a run. Brett Gardner singled in a run and Derek Jeter hit into an RBI force out to make it 7-3. Tanaka gave up a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-4.

Dellin Betances pitched the 8th. 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks and 2 K. 1.47.

David Robertson picked up his 19th save by pitching the 9th. 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 walk and 3 K. 2.83.

The win put the Yanks back at .500, 42-42, 3 1/2 back of Toronto in the AL East.

Earlier in the day, disconcerting news on CC Sabathia. After his rehab outing on Wednesday, CC woke up with swelling and fluid in his knee Thursday. A setback.

In order to bring Wheeler up, Yangervis Solarte was sent down. Dean Anna was DFA’d. Meanwhile, Alfredo Aceves was suspended 50 games for marijuana usage.

The Minors, 6-3-14

Lots of player movement due to injuries right now. A couple on the DL include Dean Anna and Ramon Flores.

AAA: SWB lost 7-6. 3B Zelous Wheeler and LF Russ Canzler 2 RBI each.

AA: Trenton won 8-3. Manny Banuelos two scoreless innings, 4 K, but he hasn’t been stretched out all year. The most he’s gone all year is just three innings. Eric Wooten 1 R in 6 IP. CF Mason Williams 3 h, 4 rbi. 2B Robert Refsnyder 2 H, 2 rbi, HR (.322). 2B of the future? (Roberts is 36, we don’t know where Solarte may go…. and (ugh) A-Rod returns next year (and turns 40 in July 2015)).

High A: Tampa lost 8-0, getting just two hits.

Low A: 8-7 loss for Charleston. SS Tyler Wade 3 h, 3 rbi. C Eduardo De Oleo with a HR.

The minors 5/27/14

AAA: SWB won 11-4. Pat Venditte (3 IP, 0.00), Jose Ramirez (2 IP, 1.17) and Mark Montgomery (1 1/3, 2.35) combined for 6 1/3 innings of scoreless relief. Kyle Roller 2 h, HR, 2 rbi. Roller is 26, 6’1″, 250 and a lefty hitter. Between AA/AAA this year, he is hitting .348-12-31. He only plays 1B, so there isn’t any kind of versatility, but you wonder if he could one day be a callup to backup Teix, or trade bait to get something the Yanks need. DH Corban Joseph drove in four. SS Dean Anna 3 hits, 2 rbi. 3B Scott Sizemore 3 hits, rbi.

AA: Trenton won 3-1. Matt Tracy (5-2, 4.25) 6 2/3 IP, 1 R. 1B Tyler Austin with 2 hits and a 2-run HR.

High A: Tampa lost 9-6 in 12 innings. SS Cito Culver 4 hits, 2 rbi. 3 RBI for 3b Dante Bichette, Jr.

Low A: Charleston swept a DH. One game was the makeup of a game ppd. on 4/7.

Regular Game (7 inn): 4-2 win, despite getting just three hits. Caleb Smith (4-3, 1.51) 2 r in 5 1/3 ip. SS Tyler Wade 2 h, 3 RBI.

Friday’s minors. Tampa wins a marathon.

AAA: SWB (20-20) beat LV, 5-3. SWB B/p 4 scoreless innings of relief. Every player in the lineup had a hit. SS Dean Anna, RF Adonis Garcia (.318) and CF Antoan Richardson each had 2 hits and an RBI. Too bad it was in the middle of the week. I might have taken in a game (LV is only a few miles from my house) if SWB was in over the weekend.

AA: Trenton (23-18) lost 2-0. Jairo Heredia (2.78) 2 1/3 IP of relief, 3 K. Pat Venditte 1 scoreless IP, (0.82). Trenton got just five hits. CF Slade Heathcott with two doubles. C Gary Sanchez is in a slump, down to .246.
