WS Game 2. Washington going home with 2-0 Series lead. Cubs choose Ross as mgr.

header_1.jpg

The Washington Nationals, the biggest WS underdog since the 2007 Colorado Rockies (who got swept by Boston) are heading home after whipping Houston 12-3 in Game 2 last night.

In winning both games at Houston, Washington beat Gerrit Cole AND Justin Verlander. Verlander has now started six WS games in his career, and is 0-5.

Stephen Strasburg gave up a 2-run HR to Alex Bregman in the first inning, but nothing after that as he pitched six innings for the win.

Five different Nationals had two hits, as they banged out 14, including 3 HR.

The Cubs apparently have chosen ESPN broadcaster David Ross as their new manager, replacing Joe Maddon who has moved on to the Angels. Remember the surprise when the Yankees chose Aaron Boone two years ago? And Eduardo Perez (Tony’s son), an ESPN broadcaster, is still in the mix for some open managerial jobs, too.

The Arizona Fall League ends tomorrow, Friday. The Surprise Saguaros, which has some Yankees’ prospects, are 16-11, have clinched their division and will be playing in the Championship game on Saturday.  Stats for those prospects.

1B Brandon Wagner .212-2-21  19 games
C Donny Sands .188-1-7  14 games
CF Josh Stowers .121-1-3   19 games.

From MLB.com

Yankees (Surprise): Daniel Bies, RHP; Glenn Otto, RHP; Donny Sands, C; Josh Stowers, OF; Brandon Wagner, 1B

Acquired from the Mariners in an offshoot of the Sonny Gray trade in January, Stowers has a chance to have four average or better tools, with his arm the lone exception. Otto has had difficulty staying healthy but can reach 97 mph and devastate hitters with his curveball when he’s at 100 percent.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

AAA: SWB (64-51) lost 12-2. Gary Sanchez, on rehab, 1 for 3 but made an error (catcher’s interference). It must be said that Austin Romine and Kyle Higashioka have done great in his absence—the Orioles lack of pitching helping a lot in that department. SWB made four errors in the game, and one was by Clint Frazier.

Maybe the IL stint will help Sanchez regain his stroke. He was 10 for his last 85 before going on the IL.

RF Trey Amburgey 2 hits. DH Erik Kratz 2 RBI.

AA: Trenton’s game was suspended in the fifth inning. To be completed today, August 8.

High A: Tampa (52-60) lost 9-2. C Jason Lopez solo HR. Daniel Bies 4 1/3 scoreless relief innings, 5 K.
