S.T. Game 18. Yanks fall to Twins, 1-0.

The Yanks (8-9-1 in spring training) lost 1-0 to the Twins on Monday, getting just three hits, one of them a double by #1 prospect Anthony Volpe.

Of all the contenders for the LF job, Willie Calhoun (1 for 2 with a walk today but also picked off first) has done the best. It still looks like Aaron Hicks will be in LF (because of his contract. Hicks was 0 for 3, 2 strikeouts) unless he is traded. But Calhoun has done the best so far in spring training.

Notable:

Oswald Peraza 0 for 2 with a walk. .176. By contrast, Volpe is hitting .321 this spring in SS competition. #3 prospect.

Oswaldo Cabrera 1 for 3. Made error.

Volpe 1 for 3, double.

Rafael Ortega 0 for 3. Competing with Hicks, Cabrera and Calhoun for LF spot.

Estevan Florial 0 for 2, walk, strikeout. SB .125 in spring training and out of options.

Tully 2 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 W, 2 K. 1 WP
Deivi Garcia (L) 3 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 W, 2 K. Gave up HR.
Norwood 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K
Bowman 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 2 K.

S.T. Game 14. Yanks edge Tigers, 4-3. Bader questionable for Opening Day.

The injury list of Yankees added another player, as CF Harrison Bader has a left oblique strain, and his timetable is uncertain. There is the good possibility that he will also miss Opening Day.

With P Carlos Rodon missing Opening Day, other starters will have to pull more weight, and after a couple of rough outings to start spring training, Luis Severino had a better performance yesterday. After several years of injuries, we are hoping for the Sevy that won 19 games a few years ago and was a 2x All-Star.

Sevy gave up a couple HR, but both were solo shots. 2 R in 4 IP. The Yanks (8-6 in spring training) got a run in the top of the 9th inning to beat Detroit, 4-3. The Yanks only had 5 hits in the game and struck out 15x.

Isaiah Kiner-Falefa hit a 2-run HR for the Yanks. There are trade rumors regarding IKF, especially with the Dodgers and Rockies.

Oswaldo Cabrera 1 for 3, double.
IKF 2 for 3, 2 RBI, 2-run HR
Anthony Seigler 1 for 1, walk, GW RBI single.
Billy McKinney 1 for 2, RBI

Severino 4 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 W, 3 K. Gave up 2 HR.
Brito (H) 3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 W, 3 K Gave up 1 HR. #27 prospect
Norwood (Winner) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Bowman (S) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.

The Yanks will have two games today, as they will split their squad. The away game is against Pittsburgh and the home game is against the Phillies.

S.T. Game 11. Judge homers in Yanks’ 9-2 win.

Aaron Judge hit a 3-run HR and Domingo German looked sharp at the Yankees (7-4 in spring training) beat the Pirates 9-2 Monday night.

Highlights

LeMahieu 2 for 3, 2 RBI
Judge 1 for 2, 3-run HR

S.T. Game 7. Yanks hit 3 HR in 9-1 win over Pirates.

Two players with fair to decent shots of maybe making the team homered, and the first eight of the nine pitchers the Yankees used gave up no hits as the Yanks (5-2 in spring training) beat Pittsburgh 9-1 on Thursday.

#1 prospect Anthony Volpe, fighting for the SS job, led off the game with a HR, and Rafael Ortega, fighting for the LF job, hit a 2-run HR in the third. Andres Chaparro hit a grand slam in the ninth.

Gleyber Torres had a tooth extraction, so he was out of service for today,

Volpe 2 for 3, solo HR and also a walk. Fighting for SS job
Chaparro 1 for 2, grand slam
Oswald Peraza 0 for 1, walked, scored 2 runs (#3 prospect) also fighting for SS job.
Jasson Dominguez 0 for 2 (#2 prospect)

Bowman 1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 W, 1 K. Gave up HR. Rough S.T. for him so far.

S.T. Games 2 & 3. Yanks split squad, win both games.

The Yankees split their squad today. Lots to report on.

They won the home game against the Braves, 7-0, as Jose Trevino hit a grand slam and the pitchers combined on a one-hitter.

Clarke Schmidt was dominating. Six up/six down and five strikeouts.

Gleyber Torres 2 for 2. 2 singles.
Aaron Judge 1 for 1 (single) and a walk.
Aaron Hicks 1 for 3
Jose Trevino 1 for 2. Grand Slam. 4 RBI
Oswald Peraza 1 for 2 (single) with a walk and strikeout as he tries to capture the SS job. #3 prospect.

Yanks land starter in Montas, give up 4 prospects.

There will surely be another deal, like dumping Joey Gallo, but Brian Cashman just completed his major objectives. Get an OF upgrade (Benintendi), get a reliever (see previous post on Effross) and get a starter.

The starter deal just went through. The Yanks got their man (after losing out on Castillo) in Frankie Montas of Oakland. They also get reliever Lou Trivino. For the pair, the Yanks give up #5 prospect Ken Waldichuk (who I really liked, but you have to give to get), #10 prospect Luis Medina, #20 prospect J.P. Sears, and #21 prospect Cooper Bowman.

A look at each.

COMING TO YANKS

Montas. 29 years old. RHP Arbitration eligible 2023, Free agent 2024. RHP. Only 4-9, but a 3.18 ERA (ERA+ 118) for a bad A’s team. Last year he was 13-9, 3.37, ERA+ 122 and finished 6th in CYA voting. For his career, 35-32, 3.73, ERA+ 110. (100 is average).

Trivino. 30. RHP. I am not sold on this one, but it may have been an if you want A, you got to take B kind of thing. Trivino is having a bad year for Oakland, 1-6, 6.47, ERA+ 59 with 10 saves. He had a good 2021, going 7-8, 3.18 with 22 saves. His career has been like that. Good, bad, good, bad. For example, in his rookie year, he was 8-3, 2.92 in 2018. ERA+ 143. But in 2019 he was 4-6, 5.25. ERA+ 82. Hot and cold. For his career, he is 20-23, 4.04, ERA+ 103. Arbitration eligible 2023, Free agent 2025.

LEAVING

#5 prospect Ken Waldichuk. 24. LHP. 6-3, 2.71 between AA/AAA this year. I have been following him since last year. Liked what I saw. You got to give to get, though. 12-8, 3.00 in minor league career, 50 games, 48 starts. 328 K in 215 2/3 IP.

#10 prospect Luis Medina. RHP. 23. 4-3, 3.38 at AA this year. 14-20, 4.46 in minor league career, 86 games, 84 starts.

#20 prospect J.P. Sears. LHP, 26. Pitched in 7 games for Yanks this year, 2 starts. 3-0, 2.05, ERA+ 190. Was 1-1, 1.67 at AAA this year. Did very well in brief time in majors this year.

#21 prospect Cooper Bowman. 2B/SS. 22. Righty bat. .217-8-35 with 35 SB at High A this year. In 111 minor league games, .227-12-58 with 48 SB.

Seeing what the Mariners got for Castillo (they gave up 4 prospects, including their 1, 3 and 5) you knew that Montas would not come cheap. At least the Yanks gave up one of the top 4 prospects they had. But 3 top 10’s go today, as well as Sears.

I’ll have to update the prospect list.
