S.T. Game 28. Yanks beat Phils, 6-3. Stanton HRs 2X. More cuts.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Giancarlo Stanton homered twice as the Yanks (16-8-4) beat the Phillies 6-3 in spring training action Friday night.

It’s the last game at Tampa for spring training. They have a game on the road Saturday (Gio Gonzalez starting) and also Sunday in Florida, then go to DC for an exhibition game against the Nationals in Washington, D.C., then have two days off before opening the season at home in the Bronx Thursday against the Orioles.

Jonathan Loaisiga showed his talent and his rawness. He pitched 4 innings, striking out 7, but gave up 2 solo HR.

Two of the Yanks’ runs scored on wild pitches.

Stanton 2 HR, 3 RBI. One HR an absolute bomb.
LeMahieu 2 hits.

Loaisiga 4 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 W, 7 K. Gave up 2 HR.
Britton (W) 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Tarpley (H) 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Ottavino (H) 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H. 0 W, 1 K
Hale 2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 W, 4 K.

Cuts made today: Clint Frazier (6 for 46 in S.T. with 15 strikeouts—aftereffects from concussion problems last year?)

Also (from the NY Post): The Yankees also announced pitchers Rex Brothers, Danny Coulombe, Phillip Diehl and Drew Hutchison were re-assigned to minor league camp.

S.T. Game 27. Yanks fall, 11-3. Some injury concerns alleviated.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Maybe the signing of Gio Gonzalez made Domingo German try too hard today, because after a decent spring training, German had a rough day today, giving up 3 HR in an 11-3 loss to St. Louis.

Some injury concerns were alleviated today. Tyler Wade, who complained of hip tightness yesterday, felt much better today. Greg Bird’s elbow, hit by a pitch yesterday, swelled up, but X-rays, thankfully, were negative.

Hopefully, spring training instructor Lee Mazzilli is ok. He was hit in the head by a line drive during batting practice Wednesday in Tampa and was in the hospital for observation.

Gleyber Torres had a double and 2 RBI.
Gio Urshela had 2 hits.

German (L) 3 2/3 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 0 W, 4 K. Gave up 3 HR, 2 to Dexter Fowler.
Brothers 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Tarpley 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K. Hasn’t given up a run this spring.
Reeves 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 2 W, 0 K.
Coshow 1 IP, 4 R. 5 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Diehl 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 2 K.

The Yanks are 15-8-4 this spring training. Opening Day is one week away.

One-time Yankee Ichiro Suzuki ended his career today in Japan. He played the first two games of the season for the Mariners, going 0 for 5.

S.T. Game 26. Yanks fall 2-1. Concerns about Wade now?

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks (15-7-4) lost to Houston, 2-1, Wednesday, and now may have concerns about Tyler Wade.

Wade was removed from the game with tightness in his hips. If it makes him unavailable for the Opening Day roster, the Yanks could turn to Clint Frazier, but Frazier is only hitting .140 this spring training.

The Yanks only managed four hits in the game. Gleyber Torres had a double, drew two walks, and scored their only run.

Luke Voit had two hits.

Gary Sanchez had an RBI double.

Holder 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Cortes (BS) 3 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 4 H, 0 W, 3 K.
Harvey (L) 2 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 W, 3 K. Gave up 1 HR (to Correa).
Brothers 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 3 W, 2 K.

S.T. Games 22 and 23. Yanks hit 3 HR in each game, win both. Hicks to miss Opening Day.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Before we get to Sunday’s games, some news.

Kyle Higashioka sent down to AAA SWB.

Aaron Hicks will miss Opening Day. He got a second cortisone shot for his back.

This means, for a while (a week?) that Greg Bird AND Luke Voit could be on the opening day roster. Stanton would play LF, Gardner CF, Judge RF. Bird or Voit 1B, the other DH.

Rumors are the Yanks have made an offer to Gio Gonzalez, but are probably far apart. Being over the cap already, I can’t see the offer being substantive, and Gio made $12MM last year. My guess is that the Yanks probably offered half of that to cover themselves in case Severino has more issues and cannot come back in May.

Ok, the Yanks won BOTH split squad games today, hitting 3 HR in each game. So they are 13-6-4 for spring training.

Game 22. Yanks beat Phillies, 7-3.

Troy Tulowitzki 2 hits, a 2-run HR.
Greg Bird solo HR.
Gleyber Torres solo HR.
Tyler Wade 2 hits, 2 SB
Matt Lipka 2 for 2, 2 SB

Great outing for James Paxton. Not so for Chad Green.

Paxton 4 1/3, 1 R, 0 H, 2 W, 4 K.
Green (BS)  2/3 IP, 2 R, 2 R, 3 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Betances (W) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Kahnle (H) 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Coulombe 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.
A. Severino 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 W, 2 K.

Game 23. Yanks beat Orioles, 5-3.

Jonathan Loaisiga needed a good outing to keep up with Luis Cessa and Domingo German as far as filling in for Luis Severino and CC Sabathia in April. He provided it.

Kyle Holder 2 hits, RBI
Miguel Andujar solo HR.
Luke Voit 2 -run HR (the competition remains good and fierce between him and Bird).
Higashioka 2 hits.
Zack Zehner 2 hits, solo HR.

Loaisiga (W) 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Hale (H) 3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Hutchison (H) 2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 W, 0 K. Gave up 1 HR
Brothers (S) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 2 K.

S.T. Game 19. Yanks fit to be “tied” in today’s game. Rule changes coming this year and next.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

For the fourth time in 19 S.T. games, a Yankees game has ended in a tie. Today it was 1-1 vs. Toronto.

The Yanks’ S.T. record is 9-6-4.

Luis Cessa cemented his stake to be a temporary replacement for Luis Severino or CC Sabathia in the rotation come April. Severino and CC will be out for the first few weeks. Cessa has had a great spring so far, and today threw four shutout innings.

Singles by 2b Gleyber Torres and SS Troy Tulowitzki followed by an RBI groundout by Miguel Andujar plated the Yanks’ only run.

C Kyle Higashioka  went 2 for 2 with a double.

Cessa 4 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 W, 3 K.
Cortes (H) 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Coulombe (BS) 1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Brothers 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 W, 0 K.
Espinal 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.

S.T. Games 15 and 16. A tie and a win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yankees had a split squad today, so first, the away squad, who tied, 2-2, with the Tigers today.

Since on the road, mostly the prospects and minor leaguers.

Brandon Wagner solo HR.

Miguel Andujar 2 hits.

Cortes 2 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K. Gave up HR (Miguel Cabera).
Coulombe 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 3 K
Adams 2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Coshow 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Farquahar (H) 2/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 3 W, 0 K.
Hale (BS) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H. 1 W, 2 K.
Brothers 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.

Despite the nice story Farquahar presents (the brain aneurysm last season), it is best he start in the minors before a possible call up.

The home game saw a 6-5 win (record 8-6-2).

Gardner 2 hits.

Zack Zehner GW 2-run HR.

Clint Frazier hit, RBI.

Gio Urshela solo HR.

Happ 4 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 0 W, 6 K. Gave up 2 HR. Ok this spring, not great yet. Looking for better. 1 WP.

Ottavino 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 3 K. Awesome.
Chapman (H) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 w, 1 K.
Betances (BS) 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Holder 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K. 1 HBP.
Kahnle (W) 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 W, 1 K.

With the tie and win, the Yanks’ S.T. record is 8-6-2.

S.T. Game 4. Tough day for two prospects in Yanks’ 10-4 loss.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks (2-2) lost to Detroit in spring training game #4 in a game called because of rain in the seventh inning. The score was 10-4.

It started out well. The Yanks got four runs in the top of the first, three of them via a HR by Greg Bird. But out of the four hits they got on the day, three were in that first inning.

For minor league prospects Chance Adams and Domingo Acevedo, it was a brutal day. Both of them couldn’t even last an inning, and both gave up 5 runs.

Adams 1/3 IP (L), 5 R, 4 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Lail 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Abreu 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Acevedo 2/3 IP, 5 R, 2 H, 2 W, 1 HBP, 0 K. Gave up grand slam.
Hutchison 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Brothers 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Harvey 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K.

Adams, 24, RHP, was great in 2016 and 2017, but took a big step backward in 2018 and more so today. In 2016, he was 13-1, 2.33 between A+ and AA, and in 2017 went 15-5, 2.45 between AA/AAA. But last year he was 4-5, 4.78 at AAA and 0-1, 7.04 in three MLB games. Today didn’t help. He’s AAA bound, but needs to regain that 2016 and 2017 form and rebound from last year.

Acevedo, who’ll be 25 soon, a RHP, was 3-3, 2.99 last year, mostly at AA Trenton. We’ll have to see if he is ticketed for AAA or AA.

S.T. Game 1. Yanks lose, 8-5.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks got off to a 3-0 lead on Boston but lost 8-5 in their first spring training game this season.

The good:

Aaron Hicks had an RBI double.

Gleyber Torres homered.

Greg Bird was 2 for 2 with an opposite field double and a single to right.

Clint Frazier smoked a single up the middle and hit a long fly to right caught on the warning track.

Ryan McBroom hit a HR.

Tyler Wade had a double, as did Trey Amburgey.

The not so good:

A lot of pitchers the Yanks used in the game are pitchers that, quite frankly, we don’t want to see on the mound for the Yankees at any time this year.

They were pitchers destined for AAA or pitchers that are not so hot trying to stay in the majors by latching on to the Yanks or are pitching for the Yanks hoping to latch on to another club by pitching well now and having another club pick them up.

Cortes (L) 2 2/3 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 0 W, 3 K.
Hutchinson 1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 W, 0 K. Gave up 3-run HR.
Coulombe 1 1 /3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Coshow 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Brothers 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K
Harvey 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Diehl 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.

Cortes has 4 games of MLB experience, 0-0, 7.71. 24, LHP,  AAA bound where in 35 games (25 starts) he is 9-10, 2.93.

Hutchinson is a guy the Yanks are looking at but a guy you wonder why they are even looking at him. A DFA candidate. The first four batters he faced today were a double, HR, single and walk. In 2018, 5 starts and 11 relief appearances for the Phillies and Texas. 2-2, 6.75. 32-23, 5.10 in his career. Hoping to just latch on to a team …. anywhere. As I mentioned, a DFA candidate hoping to (if he doesn’t make the Yanks) show himself off to someone else. He didn’t do that today.

Coulombe was 1-1, 4.56 for the Rockies in 2018, 6-4, 4.27 in his MLB career. Another marginal major leaguer like Hutchinson hoping to get a crack at the majors, maybe go to AAA with the Yanks or prove himself to another team. Another DFA candidate.

I don’t mean to be rough on Hutchinson or Coulombe, but remember last year when infielder Danny Espinosa, the former Nationals infielder, was in camp and was let go after just a couple of weeks? That is what I am thinking of Hutchinson and Coulombe. In for a look-see, but won’t be there long.

Coshow was lousy at AAA SWB last year, 1-4, 4.95.

Brothers pitched in just one MLB game last year. He was with Colorado 2011-2015 and with the Braves in 2017. 20-14, 3.79 in his MLB career.

Harvey and Diehl are both AA or AAA bound.

The Yanks and Bosox didn’t use too many players today that would be considered for the MLB roster.

For the Yanks, it was Torres, Hicks, Andujar, Bird (maybe, he has to beat out Voit) and perhaps Frazier as far as guys you consider major leaguers.

None of the pitchers.

The Yanks face Tampa Bay at home tomorrow. 1 PM, MLB.
