Minor League Championships. Both SWB, Trenton open with wins.

AAA: SWB got two in the bottom of the 9th to win the opener of the best-of-five International League playoff series 8-7. With one out, Juan Miranda singled and went to 2nd on an error. PR Chris Basak scored on a double by Tim Battle, who spent the year at Tampa. After Ben Broussard was intentionally walked, Matt Carson grounded into a forceout before Eric Duncan’s single won it.

Chase Wright outdueled megaprospect David Price in this one. Both went 6 IP, Wright giving up two runs, Price four. The Yankees bullpen blew a 6-2 lead by giving up five in the 8th. David Robertson gave up 3 runs in 1 1/3 IP, while Zach Kroenke didn’t get anyone out in giving up 2 runs. The win went to Mark Melancon, who pitched a scoreless top of the 9th. Shelley Duncan had two doubles and two RBI, and Ben Broussard had a two-run HR. Juan Miranda had two hits and Nick Green had three, but what a hit for Battle, who had entered the game earlier as a PR for Shelley Duncan.

AA: Trenton trying to defend the Eastern League championship they won last season. Trenton won their opener 3-1. Eric Hacker gave up 1 run on just 3 hits in 6 IP. Michael Dunn and Jhonny Nunez combined for 3 scoreless innings of relief. Chris Malec with two hits and two RBI. Two hits and an RBI for Francisco Cervelli. Three hits for Ramiro Pena.

Minor League Playoffs. SWB goes up 2-1, Trenton advances.

AAA: SWB won 6-4 to take a two games to one lead in their 1st round playoffs (best of 5). I have a few friends who were up at the game tonight. Igawa started, 2 R, 1 ER in 7 IP. Strickland the save, 3 K in 1 1/3 IP. Ben Broussard 3 for 3, Eric Duncan a 3-Run HR. Nick Green 2 hits and an RBI.

AA: Trenton, last year’s Eastern League champ, advances to the finals this year, sweeping Portland in the first round 3 games to none with a 5-4 win. Hopefully they defend their title (remember what I’ve written? That Trenton pitching coach Scott Aldred is the real coaching star in the organization?). Down 4-3, the Thunder tied it in the 8th and won it in the 9th. Jason Jones gave up 4 R in 6 IP. Kevin Whelan got the win with 2 scoreless innings of relief in which he struck out five. Michael Dunn K’d two and got the save. Colin Curtis went 4 for 4, 2 RBI, double and triple.

Minor league playoffs. Both Yanks AAA/AA teams win series openers.

AAA: SWB takes Game 1 of its best of 5 vs. Pawtucket, 7-1. Chase Wright went 4 2/3, giving up just one run, but was wild, walking 5 to go along with giving up 4 hits. Steven Jackson got the win with 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief, K’ing 3. David Robertson K’d 3 in 1 1/3 as SWB pitchers combined for 12 K. Justin Christian had a double, HR and 2 RBI. Chris Stewart had 3 hits, double, HR, 2 RBI. Ben Broussard had a solo HR.

AA: Trenton eked out a 2-1 win in Game 1 of its best of 5 vs. Portland. Eric Hacker won it with 5 2/3 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 6 K. Michael Dunn and Jhonny Nunez combined for 3 1/3 of scoreless and hitless relief, with Nunez K’ing 4 in his 2 1/3 innings. Trenton won despite getting only 4 hits, getting one run unearned via a two-out throwing error. Edwar Gonzalez an RBI.

Pinstripe Prospects: The Minor League Report.

AAA: SWB split a DH, both games by 3-2 scores. They won the opener. Traber went 3 scoreless, Robertson got the W (4-0, 2.06 at AAA) despite giving up 2 R in 2 IP, and Steve Jackson went the final 2 (only 7 innings for minor league DH’s) for the save. Eric Duncan, Chris Basak and Chris Stewart with the RBI in a 3-run 2nd.

In the loss in the nightcap, Kei Igawa (14-6, 3.45 at AAA) went 6, giving up 3 runs and taking the loss. Ben Broussard and Nick Green had two hits each.

AA: Trenton was routed 11-3. Jason Jones had a rough regular-season end to a good season by giving up 9 R in 4 IP (13-7, 3.33 at AA). Colin Curtis had 2 hits, HR, 3 RBI.

A+: Tampa won 6-5. Luis Nunez, 3 hits, HR (Grand Slam), 4 RBI.

A: 10-2 win for Charleston. Jesus Montero, 2 hits, 3 RBI. 3 hits for Austin Romine. Abe Almonte and Brandon Laird each with 2 hits and 2 RBI, Laird’s 23rd HR.

Tampa’s season is over. SWB and Trenton finish their regular season’s today then start the playoffs later this week (Wed.). Charleston finishes its season today.

Staten Island goes on for another week.

The GCL Yanks have been done for a while. The GCL had their championship games. The GCL Phils beat the GCL Nationals for the title.

Pete Abraham reports on who is coming up (today is Sept. 1st) and who isn’t for now.

Pinstripe Prospects: The Minor League Report.

AAA: That’s more like it. Hughes 6 1/3, 2 R, 6 hits, 1 walk, 7 K. A 3-2 SWB win. Phil Coke and Mark Melancon 1 1/3 each for the save, 2 Ks for Coke, 3 for Melancon. Solo HRs by Ben Broussard and Nick Green.

AA: 4-2 loss for Trenton. Eric Hacker 2 R in 3 IP. (7-4, 2.76 at AA). Colin Curtis solo HR, 2 doubles for Edwar Gonzalez.

A+: Tampa lost 5-1. With one day of rest, Humberto Sanchez went 2 IP for the first time. 2 R, 3 Hits, 1 walk, 3 K. Sanchez, you may recall, missed all of 2007 due to TJ surgery.

A: 9-3 win for Charleston. C Austin Romine (Dh’d last night) 3 hits, HR, RBI. .296-10-46. Montero isn’t the only catching prospect. 3B Brad Suttle 2 hits, double and HR, 2 RBI. 2 hits, HR, 2 RBI for 1B Brandon Laird (.267-21-80). Two hits, 2 RBI for 2B Justin Snyder (.283).

See the post of last night for a great quote from the Yankee Truth, and go to the comments to catch up on more comments on last night’s game. Speaking of last night’s game,
What presses more, this, or A-Rod?

Now for the minors.

AAA: 9-1 SWB. Playoffs start next week. Igawa (14-5, 3.41) with six scoreless IP. Lovely AAA stats, Kei. Transfers to squat in the majors. Shelley Duncan (see Igawa) 2-run HR. 3 RBI for Ben Broussard, 2 for Nick Green. Prospects? More like has-beens. But then, that’s what the Yanks have been doing at AAA, and that needs changing.

AA: Trenton lost 10-5. Jason Jones (13-6, 2.86) 3 R in 6 IP. I’ll continue to say it. Scott Aldred is the real coaching star of this organization. Look at what he did with Alan Horne (injured this year) last year at Trenton. Eastern League Pitcher of the Year. His work with Kennedy, Hughes, Joba, McCutchen, Aceves, Jeff Marquez (15 wins last year, struggled this year). Chase Wright this year. Jones (despite last night’s loss) this year. Put this guy at AAA or better, the majors. His work speaks for itself. Reegie Corona 3 hits, 2 doubles. Kevin Russo 2 hits, double, 3 RBI. Playoffs next week.

A+: No playoffs for Tampa. 5-1 win last night. Christian Garcia (4-2, 2.90) 1 R in 7 IP. 10 K. Luis Nunez and Chris Kunda 2 RBI each.

A: No playoffs for Charleston, despite Montero, who had two hits last night (.321). 4-2 loss last night. Brandon Laird HR #20.

Remember that teams aren’t kept together, what with promotions. A team that starts out great could finish lousy because of their best players getting promoted to the next level.

Great. As Tim calls them, the “Jayvees” choked one away to the Phils last night. Blew a 7-0 lead and lose in 13, 8-7. It’s bad enough my project ends next week, meaning…searchtime. Bad enough I have a diehard Phillies guy in an office behind me talking about the Phils and distracting me from my job for part of the day. (I’m in a cubicle, down the hall from his office, but yak yak yak—disturbing). Now after this, he’ll probably not shut up all day. Excuse me, trying to work here!

Pinstripe Prospects: The Minor League Report.

Being away this weekend, I didn’t catch up on the minors. I did see about Hughes’ poor performance on Friday.

I do see Chase Wright’s 7 scoreless IP on Saturday. He’s had a good year.

USA gets bronze at the Olympics.

AAA: A good outing for Alfredo Aceves in SWB’s 2-0 win. 6 IP, 0 r, 3 hits, 2 walks and 8 K. 2-3, 4.12 at AAA. 2 IP, 3 K for Mark Melancon (2.70). The only runs of the game were as a result of Ben Broussard’s 2-run HR.

AA: Trenton 8-4. George Kontos 6 IP, 2 R. 6-11, 3.65. Reegie Corona 3 hits, 2 RBI for Chris Malec.

A+: DH for Tampa. Lost Game 1, 7-0. Kevin Smith was 3 for 3.

Game 2: Won 3-0. Five scoreless for Zach McAllister (8-6, 1.83 at Tampa. Hopefully the 20 year old is in AA next year). Mitch Hilligoss 3 for 3. As for McAllister, in 151 IP this year at low and high A, he is 14-9, 2.09. 115 K, just 21 walks.

A: DH for Charleston. Lost Game 1 5-1. Jairo Heredia 4 R in 5 IP. 5-7, 3.33. He’s still 18. Montero 2 hits, RBI.

Won the nightcap 12-4. Montero 3-run HR. .322-17-83. Abe Almonte 2 hits, 3 RBI. Montero is still 18.

Humberto Sanchez at GCL has pitched in 12 games. 11 2/3 IP. 0-1, 2.31, 15 K. 9 games started, but only 1 inning stints.
