AAA: Aaron Judge has been out a week with what is described as a day-to-day issue. SWB won 9-3. Luis Severino improved his AAA record to 6-0, 2.11, even though he gave up 3 runs in 5 IP. He most likely was a bit rusty from the break and having a start skipped because he became a new daddy. Overall, (AA/AAA) the 21-year-old is 8-2, 2.60 in 18 starts this year. DH Ramon Flores, 1B  Kyle Roller and SS Gregorio Petit all drove in two runs. Each of the top four guys in the lineup (CF Ben Gamel, LF Jose Pirela, Flores and 2B Rob Refsnyder) had two hits each.

AA:  Trenton lost 2-1 in 17 innings. Outfielders Taylor Dugas (the losing pitcher) and Danny Oh had to pitch.

High A: Tampa ppd.

A: Charleston won 8-7. LF Griffin Gordon 2 h, 2 rbi. SB #67 SS Jorge Mateo.

A: Charleston’s game was suspended with the score 0-0 in the third.

Game 85. Yanks lead AL East by 3 after 6-2 win.

Before today’s game, some moves. The Yanks brought up infielder Cole Figueroa from SWB and sent down Jose Pirela. They DFA’d Taylor Dugas.

Figueroa, a 28 year old lefty hitter,  was hitting .317-3-36 for AAA SWB this season. He is 28, a lefty hitter and was .233-0-6 in 43 at bats for Tampa Bay last year. He played 3B today and went 2 for 4, both doubles.

The Yanks won 6-2 and increased their AL East lead to 3 games over Baltimore. Toronto is 3 1/2 back, the Rays 4 1/2, Boston 5 1/2 back. Hopefully this weekend the Yanks help to bury Boston.

Masahiro Tanaka gave up 2 doubles and 2 runs in the second, but those were the only hits and runs he gave up.

In the first, Brett Gardner, named to the All-Star team to replace injured KC OF Alex Gordon, homered (10) to put the Yanks up 1-0. Gardner had three hits in the game. Tanaka then gave up the 2 runs in the top of the second.

Mark Teixeira’s RBI single in the third tied the game, and Jacoby Ellsbury singled in two in the fourth to make it 4-2.

In the eighth, Ellsbury reached an a throwing error that let two runs score and made it 6-2.

Tanaka (W, 5-3, 3.63) 7 2/3 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 H,  1 walk, 6 K.
Shreve 1 IP, 0 r, 1 H, 0 walks, 0 K. 2.04.
Warren 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 1k. 3.46

AAA: Luis Severino gave up just one run, but only went four innings as he struggled through 84 pitches in SWB’s 5-1 win. Brandon Pinder pitched three scoreless innings of relief. CF Ben Gamel 2 hits, 2 RBI. 2B Rob Refsnyder 2 hits, HR. It’s too bad Refsnyder doesn’t play SS. The Yanks could really use a righty bat (better than Pirela and Petit, as well as Ryan) who can platoon with Drew and Gregorius, both lefty hitters, who can play 2B AND SS. Maybe Cashman can find one at the trade deadline. LF Taylor Dugas went 3 for 3.

AA:    Trenton won 8-6. 2 RBI CF Mark Payton. 2 hits, solo HR for C Gary Sanchez. 2 hits, rbi for SS Ali Castillo and LF Jake Cave.

High A:   6-4 Tampa win. SS Tyler Wade 3 hits. Three others with two hits each.

A: Charleston got a run in the bottom of the 9th and won 3-2. 3B Isaias Tejeda 2 rbi, SS Jorge Mateo his 54th SB. CF Austin Aune the GW hit.

Game 80. McCann’s walk-off saves Yanks, puts them in first.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

Down 5-3 heading into the bottom of the 12th, the Yankees got an RBI single by Mark Teixeira and a walk-off 3-run HR by Brian McCann (13) to beat Tampa Bay 7-5 last night.

The win, coupled with a Baltimore loss, put the Yanks alone in first place with a 43-37 record. Game 81 today marks the halfway point of the season.

Tampa Bay and Toronto are both two back, Boston seven back.

Masahiro Tanaka had a rough start to the game, giving up two runs only four batters in, but settled in to give up just one more run after that. Not a great outing but ok after a couple of bad ones.

The Yanks however, were trailing 3-0 in the bottom of the eighth. Mark Teixeira’s 20th HR of the season, a 3-run shot, tied the game. The homer, #383 of his career, tied Larry Walker on the all-time list.

Tampa Bay scored two in the top of the 12th before the Yanks got four in the bottom half on a  leadoff walk to Gardner, a one-out single by A-Rod, Teix’s RBI single and the McCann walkoff HR.

Tanaka 6 IP, 3 R, 6 H, 1 walk and 5 K. 3.94
Capuano 1 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 walks and 2 K. 5.00
Rumbelow 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks and 0 K. 3.86
Betances 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks and 2 K. 1.11
Wilson 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks and 2 K. 3.14
Warren 1 2/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 walk and 2 K. 3.52
Shreve (W 6-1, 1.87) 2/3 IP, 1 R, 2 h, 2 walks and 0 K.

The Yanks put Carlos Beltran on the 15-day DL (rib cage) and called up Ramon Flores. They sent back Taylor Dugas and called up Gregorio Petit.

A-Rod is now at 3014 hits, six behind Rafael Palmeiro.

Game 79. Yanks edge Angels, 3-1.

It isn’t pretty sometimes, but Nathan Eovaldi is 8-2. The ERA is still 4.52 and sometimes he doesn’t go as deep in games as you may like, but I’ll take the 8-2.

He pitched 5 1/3 scoreless innings yesterday to gain the win as the Yanks beat the Angels 3-1.

The Yanks scored in the third on a single by Gregorius, a sac bunt by Drew and an RBI single by Headley.

Garret Jones homered (5) in the sixth to make it 2-0.

Chasen Shreve got out of a bases-loaded, one out jam in the bottom of the sixth to keep it 2-0. Mark Teixeira helped with some fine defense.

With one out in the top of the eighth, McCann singled, Jones walked and Young singled to load the bases. Gregorius’ single made it 3-0.

Mike Trout homered in the bottom of the eighth to make it 3-1, the final score.

Eovaldi (W, 8-2, 4.52) 5 1/3 IP, 0 R, 5 H, 3 walks and 3 K.
Shreve 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 1.64. He’s been great.
Wilson 2/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 walks and 1 K. 3.21.
Betances (7th save) 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 2 walks and 2 K. 1.13.

Headley had 3 hits and an rbi. 2 hits for Young (red hot) and 2 hits and an RBI for Gregorius.

The Yanks are off today. They are back home and have a big weekend series vs. the Tampa Bay Rays. We’ll see if Ellsbury returns to the Yanks this weekend.

The standings. Four AL East teams within one game.

Baltimore 42-36 —
YANKEES 42-37  – 1/2
Tampa Bay  42-38  -1
Toronto 42-38  -1
Boston 36-44  -7

Taylor Dugas, who  between AA and AAA, was only hitting .198-0-13, got a callup. Why Dugas, a lefty-hitting OF and not someone else? I’ll let the LOHUD Yankees blog explain. This was written before yesterday’s game. The Yanks didn’t need Dugas or Beltran in yesterday’s game.

Clearly this is an unusual situation. If the Yankees knew Beltran’s injury were going to require a disabled list stint, they surely would have recalled Ramon Flores, but Flores can’t come up yet without putting someone on the DL, and the Yankees aren’t sure they need to do that with Beltran. Basically, they need an extra position player to fill out the bench for a game or two, and Dugas fits the role, despite his ugly numbers in the minors and the fact he wasn’t even invited to big league camp.

“We paid attention,” Joe Girardi said. “He had a tremendous year last year, a guy who really grinds out at-bats and plays hard. We knew who he was.”

This call-up might last only a game. If Beltran’s legitimately hurt, Flores will surely return, and there’s a solid chance Jacoby Ellsbury will be ready by Friday. Right now, the Yankees are hoping Beltran will also be available on Friday. Beltran said he’s ready to test his ribcage/oblique mid-game to see if he’s available to pinch hit, but Girardi said he’ll only ask Beltran to do that if absolutely necessary.

Ideally, the Yankees would like to give Beltran tonight and tomorrow off, then reevaluate the situation.

“Today I woke up feeling better,” Beltran said. “We do some tests, movement. I just feel like tight, but I don’t feel the pain I feel when I took the swing. Of course, I have to go to the cage and test it out.”

For now, the Yankees have their extra outfielder. On Friday, they’ll figure out if they need something more than a temporary placeholder.

“That’s a good sign that (Beltran) doesn’t wake up and feel really sore,” Girardi said. “So we won’t make any move concerning him, and we’ll see what happens in a couple days when we get back.”

• To make room on the roster — both the 25-man and the 40-man — Esmil Rogers has once against been outrighted to Triple-A. He’s off the 40-man again, which is surely good news for Bryan Mitchell and Nick Rumbelow, who get to stick around at least a little longer.

The minors. Refsnyder roars.
