Dunham named to All-Arizona Fall League Team

From mlb.com. Yankees’ #24 ranked prospect, OF Elijah Dunham, named to All-Arizona Fall League Team.

OF: Elijah Dunham, Surprise (NYY No. 24)
The Yankees signed Dunham as a nondrafted free agent out of Indiana following the shortened 2020 Draft. This fall, he certainly looked like someone who should have gone in those five rounds. Dunham led the AFL with 11 stolen bases (in 12 attempts). In fact, he was one of only two players with at least 10 extra-base hits and five steals. Stott was the other. Dunham got it done at the plate with a .357/.465/.571 line, two homers, three triples and six doubles in 23 games. (14 RBI). He walked more times (14) than he struck out (10) over 101 plate appearances.

Dunham plays LF and 1B, and is a lefty hitter. He played 93 games between Low and High A this year, hitting .263-13-57 with 28 SB.

Other Yankees prospects in the AFL (Their team, Surprise Sagueros, won their division but lost the Championship game 6-0 to Mesa):

Austin Wells, C, #5 prospect: .344-2-18 in 18 games.
1B Andres Chaparro .275-3-15 in 20 games.

P Clay Aguilar 1-1, 10.24 6 G, 1 start
P Harold Cortijo 0-0, 5.00 8 G
P Zach Greene 0-1, 4.91 8 G

Heaney signs with Dodgers; Arizona Fall League update.

Andrew Heaney signed a one-year, $8.5 MM deal with the Dodgers. Heaney had a terrible 2021, going 8-9, 5.83 (ERA+ 76) between the Angels and Yankees. As a Yankee, he was 2-2, 7.32, ERA+ 59 (100 is average) in 12 games, 5 starts. Heaney is 32-38 in his career, 4.72 (ERA+ 90).

An update on prospects in the Arizona Fall League.

Yankees prospects in the Arizona Fall League

A quick look at how Yankees prospects are doing in the Arizona Fall League.

C Austin Wells (#6 prospect) 10 games, .306-1-10.
OF Elijah Dunham (#24 prospect) 11 games .395-2-10
INF Andres Chaparro 9 games .250-1-8

P Clay Aguilar 1-0, 15.00
P Harold Cortijo 0-0, 6.75
P Zach Greene 0-0, 0.00

Wells bat is not a question. It’s his defense that has scouts wondering if he can stick at catcher.

Houston wins AL Pennant. Also, Yankees prospects in the Arizona Fall League.

Houston has won the AL pennant, beating the Red Sox in 6 games. They face the winner of the Dodgers/Braves series in the World Series. Right now the Braves are up three games to two, with games 6 and if necessary 7, both in Atlanta.

I have family outside of LA, so go Dodgers. No matter who wins in the NL, I’ll be rooting for the NL team in the World Series. No forgiveness to Houston for the cheating scandal of a few years back, although I do respect Dusty Baker, who was not involved in that.

For Houston, it is their third pennant in the last five years. They won the WS in 2017, and lost it in 2019.

Meanwhile, Yankee prospects playing in the Arizona Fall League are P Clay Aguilar, P Harold Cortijo, P Zach Greene, P Tanner Myatt, C Austin Wells, Infielder Andres Chaparro, and Outfielder Elijah Dunham. Wells is the organization’s #6 ranked prospect, Dunham #24. They all are playing for the Surprise Sagueros. Through 5 games, Wells is 9 for 18, 3 doubles, a triple, a HR, and 5 RBI. Wells hitting isn’t a problem, but the question is whether his defense will keep him at catcher.

Jon Heyman predicts that the Yanks will sign both free agents SS Corey Seager and P Robbie Ray this offseason. We’ll see.

Minor League action 9-18-21; Couple of Doubleheaders. Low A Tampa gets no-hit.

Low A Tampa (73-42)

Regularly scheduled game: Lost 3-0, and got no-hit. (7 inning game).

Standings:

SWB 2nd in division, 3 games back
Somerset 1st by 2 1/2 games See below for Hudson Valley. First place in division still does not mean playoffs.
Hudson Valley 1st by 12 1/2. See below.

Hudson Valley still is OUT of the playoffs. The format for the 2021 Postseason will consist of two teams per league in a single best-of-5 series. The two playoff participants will be decided for each league (regardless of division) based on the best regular season winning percentage. (So if a 2nd place team in the other division has a higher winning pct., you are out).

Somerset, as of now, would make the playoffs by just 1/2 a game.

Tampa 1st by 3 1/2 games. Have clinched a playoff spot.
