S.T. Game 2. Yanks Tie O’s, 3-3. C hurt. Trade rumors.

The Yanks (0-1-1 in spring training) tied Baltimore 3-3 on Saturday.

Newly acquired C Ben Rortvedt will probably miss the start of the season due to an oblique strain. This opens the door for Rodolfo Duran (who homered in Game 1), David Freitas (who homered yesterday) Max McDowell or Rob Brantly to start the season as Kyle Higashioka’s backup catcher unless the Yanks trade for one.

Speaking of trades, Miguel Andujar is on the block. He’s blocked in the Bronx by Rizzo, Gallo, Donaldson, LeMahieu and Kiner-Falefa. I’d expect him to be dealt soon.

Besides a 2-run HR by Freitas, the Yanks got a solo HR by Josh Donaldson yesterday.

Pitching:

Waldichuk 3 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 W, 1 K. a top pitching prospect
Holmes (BS) 2 2/3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 3 W, 3 K.
Barclay 2 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Greene 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.

Luis Severino is supposed to pitch today in the Yanks first home S.T. game.

S.T. Game 1. Yanks lose, trade Voit. Place German on IL.

The Yanks had their first spring training game today, which they lost to the Pirates, 4-3, but first a couple of transactions.

P Domingo German was placed on the 60 day IL because of shoulder soreness.

Luke Voit was traded to San Diego for a 20 year old pitching prospect, Justin Lange. Lange is a former first round pick who has just 9 minor league games under his belt, but who apparenlty hit 102 MPH while in his senior year of high school. A project. One bit of trivia: Lange was born on 9/11/01.

In the game, newcomer SS Isiah Kiner-Falefa had 2 hits and minor league C Rodolfo Duran hit a HR.

Pitching:

Wesneski 3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 1 W, 4 K. Gave up HR. A top pitching prospect.
Bristo (L, BS) 1 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 W, 4 K. Gave up HR.
Milam 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Marinaccio 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 2 K.
Nittoli 1 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Spence 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K.

Of note: Greg Allen, who was with the Yanks for 15 games last year, hit a 2-run HR in the game for Pittsburgh.

The Yanks placed 4 minor leaguers on the top 100 prospect list. #8 SS Anthony Volpe, #60 SS Oswald Peraza, #61 OF Jasson Dominguez, and #96 C Austin Wells.

Game 101. Yanks get crushed, 14-0. Gallo deal completed.

The Yanks (53-48) got crushed by Tampa Bay 14-0, and only got four hits in the game.

Gerrit Cole almost gave up a HR on his first pitch of the game (just foul) but the first four batters he faced were single, walk, single for a run, 3-run HR. Four batters in, down 4-0.

Cole settled down until the sixth, when Tampa Bay got 10 runs off of him and reliever Albert Abreu. Abreu faced six batters, got no one out, gave up 4 hits (3 homers) and 2 walks. Ugh.

Got to worry a bit about Cole. ERA once under 2.00 is now over 3.00. Still good, but he's been slumping lately.

Cole (L, 10-6) 5 1/3 IP, 8 R, 7 ER, 6 H, 2 W, 10 K. Gave up 1 HR. 3.11.
Abreu 0 IP, 6 R, 4 H, 2 W, 0 K. Gave up 3 HR. 5.65
Romano 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 W, 3 K. 4.70 (Combined Cincy/NYY; 2nd Yankee game)
Holmes 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K. 4.81 (Combined Pitt/NYY; Yankees debut)

The deal for Joey Gallo went through. The Yanks get Gallo (29 y.o) from Texas for 4 minor leaguers.

This year .223-25-55, leads MLB with 74 walks. OPS+ 138. The good: 2x All Star. Gold Glove. 40 or more HR in 2017 and 2018. Much needed lefty bat. Bad news: Strikes out a lot. 207 times in 2018. Low batting average.
162 g. average: .211-41-90; OPS+ 116.

With Judge, Stanton, and Gallo, the Yanks have three guys who have had seasons of 40 or more HR, but also 200 strikeouts. Throw in Rougned Odor, who has topped 30 HR 3x, but struck out 178 times in 2019. You have the potential for a lot of homers, but oy, those strikeouts! Gallo will most likely play LF. He can play all three OF positions, 1B and 3B. He is under contract through 2022. This may mean that once healthy, Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar could both be trade bait.

Gallo wore #13 in Texas. The last Yankee to wear #13 was A-Rod. It hasn't been retired. Does Gallo get #13?

The Yanks also get LHP Joely Rodriguez in the deal. 1-3, 5.93 (ERA+ 76) this season. 2-5, 5.05 (ERA+ 88) for his career in 81 games.

The Yanks give up:

RHP Glenn Otto RHP, 25. 7-3, 3.33 between AA/AAA this season. Minor league career: 14-7, 3.07
2B/SS Ezequiel Duran, 22. .290-12-48, 12 SB at High A Hudson Valley this season.
LF/2B Trevor Hauver, 22. .288-9-49 for Low A Tampa this year.
INF Josh Smith 24 in a week. .324-9-24, 17 SB between low and High A this season.

You got to give to get. The Yanks did give up 4 promising players. But also these four were in the Yanks top 30 prospects, none were in the top 13. Otto #28, Duran #15, Smith #14 and Hauver #23.

Minor League Report.

AAA: SWB (44-22) won 14-5. They hit 6 HR

CF Socrates Brito 2 hits (should have the nickname “The Philosopher”?)
C Donny Sands 2-run HR
1B Aramando Alvarez 2 hits, 4 RBI 3-run HR
RF Frederick Cuevas solo HR
SS Kyle Holder 2 hits, 2 RBI
LF Thomas Milone 2 hits, solo HR

Low A: Tampa (46-23) lost 4-3. OF Aldenis Sanchez 2 hits, RBI. SS Roberto Chirinos solo HR.

Of course, we will have to see if any prospects are used in a trade between now and the trade deadline of July 30. Also, some prospects are untouchable. We’ll have to see which ones are in that category

AL wins All-Star Game. Minor League Report. Minor League Promotions.

The AL won the All-Star Game, 5-2 last night. Toronto’s Vladimir Guerrero, Jr., who hit a 468 ft. HR, was named MVP of the game, the youngest All-Star Game MVP ever. It was the 8th win in a row for the AL. The Angels’ Shohei Ohtani, who pitched and hit, got the win. Guerrero and his father are the third father/son combo to each HR in an all-star game.

Aaron Judge went 0 for 2 with a walk and scored a run. The other All-Star Yankees, Gerrit Cole and Aroldis Chapman, did not play.

In the minor leagues, the Yankees promoted a lot of players. I’ll name a few but probably won’t name them all.

AAA: Pitcher Glenn Otto was promoted up to here. SWB (38-20) won 5-2. LF Greg Allen 2 hits, RBI. C Rob Brantly 2 RBI.

AA: Somerset (39-21) won 3-2. CF Brandon Lockridge prmoted to here, and he hit a solo HR. LHP Ken Waldichuk with another great game. 6 1/3 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 3 W, 11 K. 3-0, 3.08 at AA. For the season, A/AA 5-0, 1.42 (12 starts). In his minor league career, 22 starts, he is 5-2, 2.19. SS Oswald Peraza 2 hits. RF Michael Beltre 2 hits.

High A: SS Anthony Volpe, and OF’s Pat DeMarco and Jake Sanford promoted to here from Low A. RF Sanford had 2 hits. Hudson Valley (40-20) won 9-4. 2B Ezequiel Duran 2 hits, 2 RBI. 3B James Nelson 2 hits, 2 RBI, a 2-run HR. 1B Chad Bell 2 hits, RBI. CF Pablo Olivares 2 hits. Starter Josh Maciejewski 5 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 2 W, 7 K, 1 HBP.

Low A: Promoted to here from the Florida Complex League: Top prospect CF Jasson Dominguez, as well as Ryder Green and LF Aldenis Sanchez. Tampa (41-18) won 6-2. Dominguez 2 hits, 2 RBI, double. He was 4 for 20 in the FCL, all singles, so this was his first extra-base hit. He’s only 18. Sanchez had 2 hits, RBI. 3B Andres Chaparro solo HR.
