S.T. Game 19. Bullpen fails in Yanks’ 10-6 loss.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

While the northeast shoveled out from a blizzard, the Yanks lost to Tampa Bay 10-6 as the bullpen had a rough outing.

Gary Sanchez homered in the first inning, and in the second, Gleyber Torres (hard to believe he’ll only be at AA) doubled in one run and scored another on a single by Ronald Torreyes.

Luis Severino had a 1-2-3 first and struck out the side in a 1-2-3 third but gave up a HR (albeit wind-blown)  and double in the second.

Jon Niese pitched a scoreless inning and walked the leadoff hitter in the fifth. In came Johnny Barbato, and he and Dietrich Enns had rough outings.

Tampa Bay got six in the fifth to go up 7-3. Torres hit a 2-run HR in the sixth to cut it to 7-5 but the Rays came back with three more in the bottom of the frame.

Miguel Andujar singled in a run in the ninth.

The loss drops the Yanks’ spring training record (I count the win over the Canadian WBC team, MLB doesn’t) to 14-5.

Sanchez had a passed ball, Torres made an error, as did Clint Frazier.

Greg Bird had a double and a triple.

Just a hunch that Severino and Mitchell win the last two starting spots.

The 25-man could be: Sanchez and Romine C, Bird 1B, Carter 1B/DH, Holliday DH (OF if needed), Castro 2B, Gregorius SS, Headley 3B, Torreyes Utility INF, Gardner, Ellsbury, Judge and Hicks OF.

Starters: Tanaka, CC, Pineda, Mitchell, Severino
Relievers: Warren (too valuable here to have him start), Niese, Layne, Clippard, Betances and Chapman.

Today’s pitching line:

Severino 3 IP, 1 r, 2 h, 1 walk, 4 K. Gave up HR.
Niese (H) 1 IP, 1 R, 0 H, 1 walk, 2 K.
Barbato (BS, L) 2/3 IP, 5 R, 4 H, 2 walks, 2 K.Gave up HR
Enns 2/3 IP, 3 R, 2 H, 4 walks, 1 K.
Holder 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 1 K.
Gurka 1 Ip 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 1 K.

S.T. Game 14. Yanks hit 4 HR in beating Canada’s WBC team, 10-4.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yankees beat the Canadian WBC team today 10-4, hitting four HRs in the process.

Matt Holliday, Gary Sanchez, Aaron Hicks and Kyle Higashioka connected.

Luis Severino had a shaky outing.

Jorge Mateo went 2 for 2 and had a SB. Hicks also had one of the three SBs for the day for the Yankees as he went 2 for 3.

Severino 2 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 1 walk, 4 k. Gave up HR.
Graham (w) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 2 k.
Chapman 1 IP, 0 r, 0 H, 0 walks, 3 K.
Barbato 2 Ip, 1 R, 2 H, 0 walks, 3 K. Gave up HR.
Enns 2 Ip, 1 R, 1 H, 1 walk, 1 K. Gvae up 1 HR.
Holder 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 1 K.

A-Rod was hired by Fox to work for Fox and FS1 and may yet be hired by the YES network. Rumors are he’s currently dating Jennifer Lopez.

S.T. Game 8. Yanks still rolling, win 8-1.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

If only these games counted.

After 8 games, the Yanks are 7-1 in spring training after beating Baltimore 8-1 tonight.

Matt Holliday, Greg Bird and Billy McKinney homered.

After missing all of last year due to injury, Bird’s power surge (2 HR the other day, another today, a 2-run blast) is very encouraging.

McKinney, who doubled the other day, had a 2-run HR and an RBI double tonight.

Gary Sanchez had two hits, inc. a double, and an RBI.

Top prospect Gleyber Torres had another hit and is 5 for 7 this spring.

Jorge Mateo had a double, rbi and an SB.

Miguel Andujar had a single to continue his hot spring.

Kyle Higashioka had a double, walk, and scored a run.

Yankees’ pitchers combined on a two-hitter with 10 K.

I think we all can be encouraged from what we’ve seen, esp. by the prospects.

Warren  3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 walk, 3 K. Gave up HR.
Chapman (w) 1 Ip, 0 R, 0 H,  0 walks, 2 K.
Clippard (H) 1 Ip, 0 r, 0 h, 0 walks, 2 K.
Layne (H) 1 Ip, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 0 K.
Enns (H) 2 IP, 0 r, 0 H, 1 walks, 1 K.
Gallegos 1 Ip, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks, 2 K.

Dietrich Enns was 14-4, 1.73 between AA/AAA last year.
Giovanny Gallegos was 7-2, 1.27 between AA/AAA last year.

S.T. Game 2: Torres shines in Yanks’ 6-5 loss.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

First off, let me apologize for not being able to do more at various meetings and with various blogs. I can’t make various meetings or do more than what I am doing. What with my work schedule and checking in on an aging mom, even doing this blog is difficult sometimes as far as finding the time. Not to mention my own health and trying to improve that. To paraphrase the Rolling Stones, Time is NOT on my side.

The Yanks tied the game in the top of the ninth but gave up a run in the bottom half to lose to the Phillies 6-5 to even their spring training record at 1-1.

For me, the highlight of the game was the performance of some kids who will start the year at AA or AAA, especially the highly touted SS, Gleyber Torres, who at 19 (now 20), was MVP of the Arizona Fall League just a few short months ago.

Torres doubled twice, one down the LF line and the other down the RF line, and scored two runs. Three of the Yanks’ five runs came on wild pitches.

But seeing Torres use BOTH sides of the field to get his doubles was impressive.

Also getting a hit today were other top prospects like Clint Frazier and Miguel Andujar.

Prospect Tyler Wade, mostly an infielder but also getting OF time to increase his versatility, made a mistake that allowed an inside-the-park HR to Maikel Franco, who had 2 HR for the day. Wade touched a ball that went under the fence. He signaled for a ground rule double, but it didn’t apply here. By the time he reached under, got the ball and threw it in, it was too late. A learning experience.

Adam Warren pitched two perfect innings. Dietrich Enns went 14-4, 1.73 for AA/AAA last year.

Warren 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 2 K.
Enns 2 IP, 2 R, 1 ER, 2 H, 0 walks, 0 K. Gave up HR. Blown save.
Camarena 2 IP, 3 R, 4 H, 0 walks, 1 K. Gave up 2 HR, back to back, Blown save.
Heller 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 3 K.
Holder 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 2 K.
Mantiply 1/3 IP, 1 R, 2 H, 0 walks, 1 K. Took the loss.

The Minors. SWB goes up 2 games to 1 with 3-0 win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (SWB) won 3-0 over the Gwinnett Braves in Game 3 of the Governor’s Cup (International League Champtionship) Series to go up 2 games to 1. A win in game 4 or 5 will give the Railriders the title.

Brady Lail, Dietrich Enns and J.R. Graham combined for a five-hit shutout with 10 K.

Pete Kozma had 2 hits, inc. a solo HR.

AA: Trenton was off. They are down 2 games to none in their best-of-five Eastern League Championship Series.
