Game 73. Sanchez and Torres power CC to win #250 as Yanks sweep Rays, 12-1.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

CC Sabathia became the 14th pitcher in MLB history with 250 wins and 3000 strikeouts when the Yanks routed Tampa Bay 12-1 this afternoon.

All of the other pitchers, save for Roger Clemens, are in the Hall of Fame.

With the three game sweep of the Rays, the Yanks (46-27) opened up a 3 1/2 game lead over the Rays in the AL East.

The Yanks struck early, knocking out defending AL CYA winner Blake Snell in the very first inning. Snell only recorded one out.

D.J. LeMahieu led off with an infield single, stole second, and Luke Voit walked. Gary Sanchez then hit a 3-run HR (21) to make it 3-0. Edwin Encarnacion then walked, and after Aaron Hicks hit into a forceout, both Gleyber Torres and Cameron Maybin walked to load the bases. Gio Urshela was HBP to force in a run and make it 4-0, and after Brett Gardner popped up for out #2, LeMahieu singled in two runs to make it 6-0.

CC gave up a run in the fifth, but the Yanks struck for another six-run inning in the seventh.

After Gardner struck out, LeMahieu and Voit each walked. Sanchez doubled in a run to make it 7-1. Encarnacion singled to make it 8-1. Hicks walked to load the bases, then Torres hit a grand slam. HR #16 on the season was Torres’ first career grand slam. 12-1.

LeMahieu 2 hits, 2 RBI .315
Sanchez 2 hits, 3-run HR (21), 4 RBI
Torres grand slam HR (16), 4 RBI

Sabathia (W, 4-4, 4.14) 6 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 3 W, 7 K.  WIN #250 OF HIS CAREER.
Holder 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 2 K.  4.93
Cessa 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 3 K.  5.73

Aaron Judge should return to the Yankees Friday, making for an interesting decision who he replaces on the roster.

Good news on Severino and German in their progress rehabbing their injuries.

Not so good on Jordan Montgomery (MRI on shoulder needed) and Dellin Betances.

The Yanks released Danny Farquhar from his minor league deal. Farquhar was trying to come back after suffering a brain aneurysm while pitching for the White Sox last year.

In discussing Greg Bird’s problem when he does get better (players have passed him on the depth chart and there isn’t room for him in the majors, AAA or maybe even AA!) I left off one first baseman…. Ryan McBroom is doing well at AAA. So you have Voit, Encarnacion, Ford, McBroom, Logan Morrison, Chris Gittens…

Minor League Report. Judge, Stanton at SWB (Stanton HRs) but SWB gets hammered. Trenton gets just one hit again.

AAA: DH Aaron Judge started his rehab for SWB, and was joined there by RF Giancarlo Stanton, but SWB (38-27) got hammered, 16-3. Judge was 0 for 4, striking out 3x. Stanton was 1 for 3, striking out 2x, but hitting a 3-run HR (and reports are it was an absolute BOMB).

2B Breyvic Valera 2 hits (.419). CF Billy Burns 2 hits. Awful night for starter Dan Camarena, who gave up 12 R, 10 ER, in 2 1/3 IP.

Danny Farquhar, trying to comeback from that brain aneurysm last year, gave up 4 runs, 2 HR, in 1 1/3 IP.

AA: Trenton (36-26) only got one hit (and no, it wasn’t a ninth-inning bunt, it was a second-inning single) in losing 3-0. Starter Garrett Whitlock 1 R in 6 IP.

High A: Tampa off. The first half of the season is over, and the FSL All-Star Game is tonight. Tampa finished the first half 28-38, sixth in the seven-team division, 13 1/2 back.

Low A: Charleston (36-32) lost 7-6 in 10 innings. CF Brandon Lockridge 2 hits, solo HR. DH Anthony Seigler (2018 1st round pick) 2 hits. 3B Max Burt 2 hits, 3 RBI.

Minor League Report. Stanton hits 2 more HR on his rehab.

Yanks send Farquhar to minor league camp. Adams, Harvey, too.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Danny Farquhar’s comeback story will continue, but at the Yanks’ minor league camp.

Farquhar, who suffered a brain hemorrhage pitching for the White Sox last April, and who then missed the rest of the 2018 season, is attempting to come back from that near-fatal incident.

He’ll now have to it at minor league camp since the Yanks sent him down.

The road back wont’ be easy, but it’s a story to root for.

The Yanks also sent down Chance Adams and Joe Harvey, both of them to AAA SWB.

Meanwhile, Aaron Hicks got a cortisone shot for his back.

S.T. Games 15 and 16. A tie and a win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yankees had a split squad today, so first, the away squad, who tied, 2-2, with the Tigers today.

Since on the road, mostly the prospects and minor leaguers.

Brandon Wagner solo HR.

Miguel Andujar 2 hits.

Cortes 2 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K. Gave up HR (Miguel Cabera).
Coulombe 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 3 K
Adams 2 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Coshow 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Farquahar (H) 2/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 3 W, 0 K.
Hale (BS) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H. 1 W, 2 K.
Brothers 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.

Despite the nice story Farquahar presents (the brain aneurysm last season), it is best he start in the minors before a possible call up.

The home game saw a 6-5 win (record 8-6-2).

Gardner 2 hits.

Zack Zehner GW 2-run HR.

Clint Frazier hit, RBI.

Gio Urshela solo HR.

Happ 4 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 0 W, 6 K. Gave up 2 HR. Ok this spring, not great yet. Looking for better. 1 WP.

Ottavino 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 3 K. Awesome.
Chapman (H) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 w, 1 K.
Betances (BS) 1/3 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Holder 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K. 1 HBP.
Kahnle (W) 1 1/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 0 W, 1 K.

With the tie and win, the Yanks’ S.T. record is 8-6-2.

S.T. Game 12. Yanks blank Phils, 6-0.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks (6-5-1) blanked the Phillies 6-0 today in spring training action.

Estevan Florial, the Yanks’ #1 prospect, hit a 3-run HR and had two hits.

Mike Ford had a solo HR.

Miguel Andujar had 2 hits.

Paxton (W) 3 1/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 W, 5 K.
Ottavino 1 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 3 K
Holder 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Farquhar 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Hale 2 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 4 K.

Nice job by the Yankees’ pitchers today.

Especially nice to see Farquhar, roughed up in his first outing since the near-fatal brain aneurysm last April, have a solid second outing.

S.T. Game 7. Forget the 8-7 loss. Farquhar an inspiration.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

It’s only spring training, so wins and losses don’t matter so much (personally, I don’t care about wins and losses until the last week. I care that no one gets hurt seriously in these games). The story today was about Danny Farquhar, who although his numbers weren’t good and he took the loss, was an inspiration.

For you see, the fact Farquhar was on the mound at all is amazing. Last April while pitching for the White Sox, he came into the dugout after a relief appearance, suffered a brain aneurysm, and almost died. This near-fatal brain hemorrhage put him in intensive care for two weeks.

He had a rough outing today, giving up 5 runs in just 1/3 of an inning, so you can see it may be a long road back.

But the fact that there IS a road back is special.

The Yanks lost to the Pirates, 8-7, to drop their S.T. record to 3-3-1.

In the first, doubles by Tulo (looking good!) and Andujar plated a run. The Yanks got another in the second on a double by Estevan Florial and a single by Thairo Estrada.

They went up 3-0 in the third when Florial doubled in a run.

The Pirates got one in the third, but the five they got in the fourth off of Farquhar did the Yanks in.

Tulowitzki a double, Bird a double, Florial 2 doubles. Andujar 2 hits, one a double. Ryan Lavarnway 2 RBI. Clint Frazier a double. The Yanks hit 6 doubles.

Cessa 3 IP, 1 R, 4 H, 0 R, 4 K.
Farquhar (L, BS) 1/3 IP, 5 R, 3 H, 2 W, 0 K.
Tarpley 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Harvey 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Hale 1 2/3 2 R, 4 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Diehl 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 2 K.
Lail 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.

Ok, Cessa did well, so has Loaisiga so far. CC is suspended for the first five games of the season, so we’ll see who takes that first start.
