The minors today.

AAA: SWB was off today, and the Pawtucket/Gwinnett game was ppd., so SWB’s magic # for clinching the division remains at 1.

AA: Trenton won 7-4. Vidal Nuno (9-5, 2.39) 1 R in 6 IP. Pedro Feliciano 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 walk and 0 K. CF Adonis Garcia 2 HR, 3 RBI. Double and solo HR 3b/2b Dave Adams (.315-8-47). If you forgot, Adams was supposed to be included in the Lee deal a few years ago but had a leg injury, which forced Seattle to call the deal off and deal Cliff Lee to Texas. SS Addison Maruszak with a solo HR. (.275-15-54).

Low A: Tampa lost both games of a DH.

Game 1: 5-1 loss, only four hits. 2 doubles for RF Tyler Austin.

Game 2: 1-0 loss, once again only four hits. 2 hits 1B Kyle Roller.

Low A:   Charleston’s game ppd.

UPDATE: SWB’s Dave Miley deservedly named IL Mgr. of the Year. Hey, you win a division (magic # 1) and do it without any home games as the traveling nomads? You deserve it!

Update 2 MAJORS: Joel Sherman@Joelsherman1

After adding Saunders to Chen/Matusz/Britton, #Orioles to add another LHP Wolf. Loading up LHs for huge games now v. #Yankees #Rays

Joel Sherman@Joelsherman1

Jack Curry@JackCurryYES

Steve Pearce hit 4th in Yankee debut. McGehee was option to Class A Charleston to open roster spot. Allows Yanks 2 recall McG sooner

The minors tonight. Hurricane cancels all FSL games. Long one for SWB.

AAA: SWB’s magic # at 1 after a 5-4, 13-inning win over Lehigh Valley, a few miles from my home. GW RBI double by 3B Kevin Russo. Adam Warren 4 R in 6 2/3 (3.71). Juan Cedeno, Ryota Igarashi, Preston Claiborne and Chase Whitley combined for 6 1/3 scoreless innings out of the bullpen. C Austin Romine 3 for 7, solo HR. 1B Kosuke Fukodome 1 for 2 with 5 walks. Solo HR CF Melky Mesa. Russo 2 for 4, 3 walks. A rough night for SS Eduardo Nunez, who went 0 for 7. 2 H, 2 walks for LF Ronnier Mustelier.

AA: Trenton lost 8-1, getting just 3 hits in the process. 2B Kevin Mahoney solo HR. Craig Heyer 7 R in 2 1/3 (2-5, 6.40).

Pedro Feliciano pitched one inning. 0 R, 0 H, 1 walk and 2 K. Since he was on the DL, he could be placed on the postseason roster and does NOT have to be called up by 9/1.

High A: Tampa was ppd. All FSL games were cancelled/postponed due to Hurricane Isaac.

Low A:  No games scheduled.

Yesterday in the minors.

AAA: SWB inched even closer to the division title with a 6-4 win. John Maine two unearned runs in 6 IP (7-5, 5.45). 2B Corban Joseph 3 h, 2 doubles, HR, 3 RBI (.271-13-54). LF Chris Dickerson 4 hits (.325). 2 hits each for SS Eduardo Nunez and just-off-the-DL DH Ronnier Mustelier. SWB’s magic # is 3.

AA: 6-1 win for Trenton. Mikey O’Brien 6 2/3 scoreless IP (5-6, 4.30), just one hit. 1B Luke Murton 3 h, double, triple, 2 RBI (.253, 67 RBI).  2 hits, RBI for both C J.R. Murphy and 3b Dave Adams (.314). Trenton is up 5 with 12 to go as far as being division champ.

High A: Tampa split a DH.

Game 1: 11-5 win. Pedro Feliciano moved up to Tampa, but was roughed up in his inning of work. 1 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 0 walks and 1 K. Jose Ramirez 5 IP, 2 unearned runs for the win (7-6, 3.30). LF Ramon Flores 2 H, HR, 3 RBI. 2 H, 2 RBI RF Tyler Austin, C Gary Sanchez and 3B Zach Wilson.

Game 2: 4-3 loss. Nik Turley, who STARTED GM. 1 (1 r in 1 IP), then gave way for Feliciano’s inning of rehab, started Gm. 2. 4 R in 6 2/3. (8-5, 3.05). Flores, in CF this game, had 2 hits. DH Slade Heathcott 2 hits, RF Austin 2 RBI.

Low A: 3-2 win for Charleston. 2B Ali Castillo with 2 h, HR, 2 RBI.

The minors today… and some MLB news.

First the MLB news. Nova has an inflammation of the rotator cuff. He’s shut down for 15 days. CC back and starts tomorrow. Phelps stays in the rotation.

AAA: SWB (Empire State) should be clinching soon! Their magic # is down to 5. A 4-3 win in 11. Mike O’Connor 3 R in 6 IP (3.78) but Manny Delcarmen and Cory Wade combined for five scoreless IP out of the bullpen. CF Melky Mesa’s HR in the top of the 11th was the game winner. 2B Corban Joseph 2 h, 3 RBI. 2 doubles, 2 walks for RF Chris Dickerson.

AA: 3-0 win for Trenton. Vidal Nuno 0 r, 4 h in 6 IP (8-5, 2.45). Upcomer Mark Montgomery two scoreless IP. RF Zoilo Almonte 3 H, 2 for C J.R. Murphy.

High A: 9-5 loss for Tampa. C Gary Sanchez made 3 errors, another by Jose Mojica. It shows in Matt Tracy’s line: 7 R, 2 ER in 3 2/3. CF Ramon Flores 3 for 3. 2 doubles. DH Slade Heathcott 2 for 4, 2 doubles. RBI. 1 B Kyle Roller 2 hits, triple, rbi.

Low A: Charleston wins 10-9 in 11. RF Robert Refsnyder, CF Ben Gamel and 3B Dante Bichette Jr. with 3 hits each. 2 HR, 3 RBI Refsnyder. 2 RBI each Bichette & Gamel.

Another 1-2-3 inning for Feliciano at GCL. It’s amazing to think that he may actually be on the team and helping come September.

The minors today. Kelvin Perez good again.

AAA: SWB reduced its magic # to 7 with a 2-1, 12-inning win. Adam Warren 0 R, 2 H in 5 IP (3.64). Kelvin Perez, who I wrote about yesterday, threw two scoreless innings (as I wrote yesterday, replace Joba with this guy?) Perez was 6-1, 1.14 at AA, and he’s 1-0, 0.00 at AAA. The winning run scored on a SF by Cervelli after Nunez stole second and third. Cervelli and Dickerson each had two hits and a RBI.

AA: Trenton got crushed 14-2. Dellin Betances (3-4, 6.51 at AA) 5 R in 4 IP. 3B Dave Adams (.315) and SS Addison Maruszak 2 hits each. Betances has been a MAJOR disapointment this year. 3-5, 6.39 at AAA, 3-4, 6.51 at AAA. 6-9, 6.44 overall. His stock has dropped faster than those in 1929.

High A: Tampa crushed 12-2. Shane Greene 9 R in 2 2/3 IP. 3 hits each for CF Slade Heathcott and RF Tyler Austin.

Low A: Charleston gave up a run in the bottom of the 9th and lost 5-4. 2 H, HR, 3 rbi for DH Casey Stevenson.

Gulf Coast League: Pedro Feliciano pitched in a game suspended after three innings. He started, got his one inning of work in, and threw a 1-2-3 inning. You wonder if he might actually be a Sept. callup and help in the last month of the season.

Yesterday’s minors.

AAA: SWB won 10-3. Mike O’Connor 3 R in 5 IP (3-6, 3.73). Kelvin Perez two scoreless IP. Juan Cedeno 2 scoreless IP. SWB banged out 20 hits. C Francisco Cervelli, with one hit (2 rbi, .255), was the only player in the lineup to not have at least two. HR, 3 RBI  2b Corban Joseph (3 hits, .260-12-43). HR, 2 RBI DH Austin Romine (2 hits).  3 hits each for SS Eduardo Nunez and 3B Ramiro Pena. Perez, 26, had a 1.14 ERA at AA Trenton, (6-1) and is 1-0, 0.00 in three games at AAA. Overall 7-1, 1.03. The age worries me (27 in October) but talk about a breakout year. SWB is 73-56, and now has a four-game lead in the International League North, which is amazing because they have been the “traveling nomads” all season while their home ballpark is being renovated. As one writer suggested, there should be no question in naming Dave Miley AAA Mgr. of the Year.

AA: While SWB got 20 hits, Trenton got just two in a 3-2 loss. SS Addison Maruszak a solo HR. (.273-13-47). Vidal Nuno 2 r in 6 IP (7-5, 2.60). Trenton, at 72-54, leads the Eastern League’s Eastern Division by four games.

High A: Tampa ppd. Tampa leads the FSL North with a 31-23 record and has a 1 1/2 game lead for the second half of the season. Overall they are fourth in their division at 61-60, 10 1/2 out, but A ball plays a split season. They finished the first half at 30-37, fourth place, 12 out.

Low A: Charleston lost 7-6. Brett Gerritse 2 R in 5 IP (3.95). Melvin Mercedes 4 R in 2 1/3 (0-1, 11.81). 2 h, 2 RBI C Francisco Arcia. Charleston is 23-31 and in last place in the SAL South, 12 back. Overall they are 62-59, fourth, 14 back in their division. They were 39-28, third, 6 1/2 back in the first half of the season.

Pedro Feliciano hasn’t thrown one pitch for the Yankees since his shoulder surgery shortly after the Yanks signed him in 2011. He threw just one inning in the minors in 2011 (GCL, no runs, no hits, no walks and 1 K) and pitched in his third GCL game of this year yesterday. He threw one inning, 0 R, 1 H, 0 walks and 1 K. In his three games he has thrown 3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 walk and 5 K. Feliciano turns 36 next week. It’ll be a long road back but at least he’s started it.

Yanks off, but should gain today anyway

The Yankees have a much-deserved and needed off-day today (the only one between 8/27 and the end of the season) before starting a weekend set up in Toronto tomorrow, when A-Rod is expected to return to the lineup.

Tampa Bay is playing Boston in Boston however, and that works to the Yankees advantage.

The Yankees magic # for clinching the division is 11 over Boston.

Their magic # for clinching at least a wild card is 7 over the Rays.

Barring a rainout, one of those numbers will go down tonight.

Player news: Shoulder surgery (rotator cuff) for Feliciano. Garrison cleared waivers, outrighted to AA Trenton.

X-Rays negative on Cano after getting HBP on the foot Wed. night. They say ice, and he’ll be ready to go Friday, but if it was up to me, I’d give him a day off up in Toronto (astroturf) as a precaution.

AAA: 4-1 win for SWB. D.J. Mitchell 6 2/3, 1 R, 8 H, 11-9, 3.40. Montero 2 HR, all 4 RBI. .288-17-66. The Carlos Pena waiver claim fell through. Yanks apparently looking for an upgrade at DH. Time to bring Montero up? Surely it’ll happen after 9/1. If he hits over the course of September, they could add him to the postseason roster. But that might mean no Posada. I can’t see them dumping Chavez, because even though he’s slumping, he can play 1B/3B. Posada hasn’t caught, and has just played 1B (not counting today’s appearance at 2B, only because the Yanks were up 14). Things could get interesting…

AA: 11-8 loss for Trenton.

High A: Tampa lost 3-2 in 10.

Low A: 5-2 loss for Charleston.

Gulf Coast League: Other than Montero, here is the story of the day. Feliciano and Marte both pitched in the game, as both are rehabbing shoulder injuries. Both haven’t pitched an inning for the Yanks this year, and won’t. 2012? Let’s see…

Feliciano pitched a scoreless inning. 0R, 0 H, 0 Walks, 1 K.

Marte? A different story. 2/3 IP, 6 R, 6 H, 0 walks, 0K and the loss.

Dante Bichette, Jr. was 2 for 4, both doubles, 1 RBI. .339

MLB news: Jim Thome returns “home.” He’s going back to the Indians for the rest of this year.

Game 128. Down 7-1 in the third, the Yanks storm back, win 22-9, hit MLB record 3 grand slams.

In a wild game, the Yankees became the first MLB team ever to hit three grand slams in the same game as they rallied from a 7-1 third inning deficit to win 22-9.

The grand slams were by Cano (22), Martin (who HR’d twice (17) in the game and who went 5 for 5 with 6 RBI) and Granderson (36). Cano and Granderson each had 5 RBI.

Andruw Jones (10) belted a solo shot, #417 of his career.

Derek Jeter had three hits as he passed Rickey Henderson on the all-time list and went to 3058. He is two short of Craig Biggio’s 3060. After Biggio comes Dave Winfield at 3110, but Jeter won’t get there this year. When Jeter began the day July 9th (the day of his 5 for 5 and 3000th hit) he was at .257. He is now at .299. Since coming off the DL, he’s been hot.

Phil Hughes started and was bombed:

Hughes 2 2/3, 6 R, 7 H, 0 walks and 5 K. ERA to 6.46.

Cory Wade gave up a 3-run HR on his first pitch. 1 1/3, 1 R, 2 H, 1 walk and 1 K, ERA to 2.36.

Hector Noesi, 1 2/3, 0 R, 3 H, 1 walk and 1 K. 3.50.

Boone Logan got the win (4-2, 2.67) by striking out all four batters he faced.

Luis Ayala, 2 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 walks and 2 K, ERA, 1.67.

Although the Yanks claimed Carlos Pena off the Cubs on waivers, the Cubs have no intention of letting Pena go.

It appears Mike Flanagan (O’s pitcher, 1979 CYA winner) ‘s death was a suicide. The lefty was 59.

Jim Thome was claimed by his old team, the Indians. We’ll see if he gets to go “home.”

News on Feliciano and Marte in the minor league report.

I don’t know about this weekend. The LVYFC (Lehigh Valley Fan Club) has members going to Baltimore Saturday when the Yanks are scheduled for a DH vs. Baltimore. With Hurricane Irene coming, it does not look good.

Game 89. Colon bombed in 1st, Yanks routed 16-7.

Yanks 53-35, 1 gb of Boston in AL East.
Three games worse than Pythagorean record. OPS+111. ERA+119

Jeter SS  .270-3-24  8 sb/11 att OPS+ 86   3004 hits.
Granderson CF .269-25-63  15/22  149
Teixeira 1B .244-25-65  2/3  133
Cano 2B .296-15-57  6/7  130
Swisher RF .249-10-49  2/4  112
Martin C .220-10-36  7/8  91
Jones DH .195-4-12  0/0  71
Nunez 3B .279-3-14  10/14  102
Gardner LF .265-4-18  23/33  101

Colon (6-4, 3.20)  ERA+128

Baseball news today. J.C. Romero did sign a AAA deal with the Yanks, we’ll see if he has anything left to be a LOOGY.

Greg Golson brought up from AAA to take A-Rod’s roster space. He was .296-5-25 at SWB.

From Lohud:

Mark Prior is back pitching after missing almost
three months because of a strained groin. He allowed an unearned run and one hit over two innings for the Gulf Coast League Yankees against Atlanta minor leaguers.

Yankees reliever Rafael Soriano threw 25 pitches during his second batting
practice session since going on the disabled list May 17 because of right elbow

Left-hander Pedro Feliciano, hoping to avoid surgery for a left shoulder
tear, has resumed a light throwing program.

Reliever Damaso Marte, coming back
from left shoulder surgery, is continuing to throw off a bullpen mound.

An awful outing for Colon, his second in a row after being so good this year. And when I say awful, I mean COYOTE UGLY.

Colon lasted just 2/3 of an inning. 8 R, just 3 ER (error by Nunez at 3B. His D really needs improvement), 6 hits, 2 walks, 0 K. ERA from 3.20 to 3.47, but it probably should have been worse. Ayala finished the first and pitched the second. 1 1/3, 1 R, 2 H, 0 walks and K. ERA 1.59. It didn’t help matters that when Ayala relieved Colon in the first, that he balked home a run.

The Yanks got four back in the third. Jones HR’d (5, 412 career). After an out, Gardner singled, Jeter walked, Granderson tripled in two and Teix got an RBI groundout. 9-4.

Noesi in for Ayala for the 3rd.

Bautista left the game with an injured ankle. In the 6th, Andruw Jones finally does something (outside of one 2-hr game he had earlier this year). He hits a 3-run HR (6, 413 career) to have another 2-HR game this year and bring the Yanks to 9-7 down. They were down 9-0 after two innings.

From Buster Olney: Looks like Colon not completely healed with his hammy;wincing when covering first base. If Yankees stay to form, he’s probably headed to DL.         Return of Nova?

After Jones’ HR, Gardner and Jeter singled (3005 for Derek) but were left stranded. After 5 1/2, 9-7 Toronto.

…and that’s as close as they got. 16-7 loss.

Noesi, their best pitcher of the night, went 3 1/3, 2 R, 4 H, 1 walk and 4 K. Toronto got two in the sixth to make it 11-7. Noesi’s ERA went to 3.45.

Logan got the last two outs in the sixth, none in the seventh. 2/3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 walks, 0 K.  ERA to 3.63.

Then, the white flag of surrender. Mitre. Once again, the Meat Tray served meat balls. 2 IP, 4 R, 3 ER (the Yanks made 3 errors tonight, Nunez, Martin and Jeter), 5 H, 0 walks, 1 K. Overall ERA? 4.58. ERA since back with the Yankees? A whopping 14.54.

Toronto got two in the seventh, 13-7, then three in the eighth for the final of 16-7.

Colon goes to 6-5, 3.47.

Jeter and Posada have now played in more games together than any other pair of Yankees’ teammates.
