Acquisitions and Minors. Semple overpowers at Low A.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

The Yanks made a couple minor acquisitions for depth in the past couple of days.

They picked up RHP Jake Barrett, 27. Barrett, a reliever, pitched in seven games for Arizona last year, going 0-1, 5.14. For his MLB career (2016-2018, all with AZ) he is 2-4, 4.05, ERA+ 113 in  103 games. He was 1-2, 3.49 as a rookie in 2016.

With the injuries to the infield, they also picked up infielder Cliff Pennington, 34 (35 in June), a switch-hitter. Pennington played in 16 games for the Reds in 2018. For his career, he has played for the A’s (2008-2012), Arizona (2013-2015), Blue Jays (2015), Angels (2016-2017) and Reds (2018). Mostly a SS/2B, he can play a little 3B, too. His 162 g. average for his career is .242-6-40, 14 SB , OPS+ 79. He was the A’s full-time SS 2010-2012. He has played in nine postseason games, going 4 for 15.

Both players will go to SWB.

Friday’s minor league action:

AAA: SWB (1-1) won over Buffalo 6-1. 3B Gio Urshela 3 hits, RBI. Starter and winner Nestor Cortes 5 2/3 IP, 0 R, 3 H, 0 W, 9 K.

A tough day for SS Troy Tulowitzki, 0 for 3 with 3 strikeouts.

The Yanks loaded the bases with no out in the second but didn’t score.

SS Kyle Holder 2 hits, 2 RBI, solo HR.

Lastly, I’d like to welcome two new nieces into the world! They were born Friday morning.

S.T. Game 8 (home game of S/S). 6 HR lead Yanks to 7-1 win.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks had a split squad today. For the sake of clarification, the home game I’ll designate as S.T. Game 8 and the away game S.T. Game 9.

This is a recap on the home game, in which the Yanks beat the Tigers 7-1.

The Yanks hit 6 HR (2 by Gardner, 2 by Judge, 1 each by Gary Sanchez and Isiah Gilliam) in beating the Tigers 7-1.

Gardner and Judge went back-to-back to lead off the bottom of the first.

Masahiro Tanaka pitched three scoreless innings, and after giving up a leadoff triple in the top of the first got two strikeouts and a flyout to strand the runner. That hit was all he gave up.

The only blip for the Yanks was a HR given up by Aroldis Chapman to the first batter he’s faced in a game this spring.

Gardner 2 solo HR, HBP
Judge 2 HR, 3 RBI
Sanchez solo HR
Gilliam solo HR
Andujar 2 hits

Tanaka (W) 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 2 K
Holder 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Chapman 1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K. Gave up HR.
Britton 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 0 K.
Ottavino 1 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Abreu 2 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 2 K.
