Game 69. Yanks snap losing streak, beat Angels 8-4.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks snapped their seven-game losing streak, beating the Angels 8-4 Wednesday night.

More woes for Tyler Clippard, though. The struggling Clippard faced two batters and gave up a double and HR. It’s looking like his role will be reduced.

The win puts the 39-30 Yanks back in first place by 1/2 a game over the Red Sox.

In the second, the Yanks jumped out in front 2-0 on a 2-run HR by Didi Gregorius (8).

Martin Maldonado hit the first of his two two-run HRs in the fourth to tie it up for the Angels.

Matt Holliday made it 3-2 Yanks in the fifth with his fifteenth HR of the season.

In the sixth, Sanchez singled, and Headley walked. Romine doubled in two runs, and Romine scored on a single by Hicks. 6-2 Yanks.

In the seventh, Holliday doubled and scored on a Castro single. Castro later scored on a single by Headley.

Put into a low leverage situation, up 8-2 in the ninth, Clippard faced two batters, gave up a double and HR, and was pulled. It has been a tough time for him lately. Aroldis Chapman then closed out the 8-4 Yankees’ win.

Holliday double, HR (15), RBI
Sanchez 2 hits.
Gregorius HR (8), 2 RBI
Romine 3 hits, 2 RBI.

Montgomery (W, 5-4, 3.74) 5 2/3 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 2 W, 5 K. Gave up 1 HR.

Betances 1 Ip, 0 R,.0 H, 0 W, 2 K. 0.40
Clippard 0 IP, 2 R, 2 H, 0 W, 0 K. 3.77. Gave up 1 HR.

Yanks split squad, but lose both games

The Yanks split the squad today, but lost both games, dropping their spring record to 1-6. It’s worth noting that we haven’t seen CC, Kuroda, Hughes, Nova, Pettitte, Jeter or Rivera yet.

In the road game, the Yanks lost to Houston 7-6. Some good points about the game came from a couple of minor leaguers eager to win the Granderson job while he is out. Zoilo Almonte went 2 for 3 with an RBI. Melky Mesa was 2 for 3 with a 3-run HR. Top prospect Tyler Austin had a triple and scored a run. Matt Diaz went 1 for 3 and drove in a run. In this, and the other game, every candidate for that LF job that Granderson vacated with his injury did well. Even Adonis Garcia had a hit and an RBI in this game.

Brett Marshall started this game. He is probably AAA bound but did a good job, impressing if he needs to be a mid-season call-up. The 22 year old righty was 13-7, 3.52 in AA last year. He pitched 3 scoreless innings, giving up 1 hit and striking out 3. Dellin Betances, the former top prospect who slipped badly last year, had a scoreless inning and K’d 2, but also showed the wildness that has set him back, walking two. Mikey O’Brien gave up 3 R in 1 1/3 and Shane Greene gave up 4 in only 1/3 IP which led to the loss. Shaeffer Hall and Kelvin Perez each pitched a scoreless inning.

In the home part of the split squad, the Yanks lost 1-0 to Toronto. Dave Phelps, bidding for a starter’s job (esp. since Hughes may not be ready come Opening Day), pitched 3 scoreless innings. David Aardsma pitched a scoreless inning. The Yanks are counting on him, as well as Joba, to fill the 6/7 inning role. Branden Pinder pitched a scoreless inning as did Clay Rapada. Chase Whitley gave up the game’s only run in his inning and a third. Juan Cedeno 2/3 scoreless. Jim Miller a scoreless inning.

The Yanks didn’t score in this game, but Brett Gardner and Ichiro Suzuki continued their hot springs so far by each going 1 for 3. Ronnier Mustelier, in the battle for Granderson’s position, went 1 for 1. Juan Rivera, also fighting for an OF spot, was 2 for 2.

Overall, today was a better day than yesterday, which featured sloppy play. There was some impressive pitching, and the OF candidates all did well.

Now (1-6) to start winning some of these games.

Trenton goes down 0-2 in Eastern League Championships.

Shaeffer Hall gave up 7 R, 5 ER in 3 IP as Trenton lost 7-5 to fall behind two games to none in the Eastern League (AA) Championship Series.

RF Zoilo Almonte had 2 hits, a HR, 3 RBI. 1B Tyler Austin had a solo HR.

Minor league playoffs.

AAA: SWB fell into an 0-2 hole with a 3-2 loss tonight. Ramon Ortiz 3 R, 1 ER in  6 1/3. Errors by 3B Kevin Russo and RF Cole Garner were costly. Garner did have 2 hits and an RBI.

AA: Trenton tied up their series at a game apiece by scoring three in the 9th. David Aardsma started (rehab, and in a AA playoff game). 1 IP,  1 R, 3 H, 1 walk and 0 K. Not good if you are hoping for more of him and less of Joba. Shaeffer Hall 5 2/3 IP, 0 R, just 1 hit. DH Rob Segedin bases-loaded triple in the top of the 9th. Solo HR SS Addison Maruszak.

The minors today.

A-Rod will start his rehab with High A Tampa tomorrow. David Aardsma will be heading there also.

AAA: SWB clinched its division with a 5-0 win tonight. John Maine 7 IP, 3 H. (8-5, 4.97). SS Eduardo Nunez, DH Ronnier Mustelier, C Austin Romine and RF Cole Garner all hit HRs.

AA: Trenton lost 5-3. Shaeffer Hall 5R, 4 ER in 5 IP (9-10, 3.67). Addison Maruszak, SS, with a 2-run HR (.274-16-56).

High A: Tampa scored 5 in the top of the 9th for a comeback 5-4 win. Jose Ramirez 1 R in 6 IP. RF Tyler Austin with a grand slam.

Low A: Charleston split a DH.

Game 1: 7-2 win. 2B Casey Stevenson 2 h, 4 RBI. 1B Rey Nunez 2 h, 2 RBI. Brett Gerritse 3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 walks, 5 K.

Game 2:   7-1 loss as Charleston only got two hits. C Francisco Arcia HR.
