Game 65. Going for 9 in a row.

The Yanks have won 8 in a row, 18 of their last 22. No surprises in today’s lineup. After being pulled yesterday due to a bruised quad, Swisher is out and Jones is in RF. Also, after catching 14 innings yesterday, Martin sits. Stewart catches.

Yankees 39-25, best record in AL. They are up by 1 1/2 in the AL East. One game better than the Pythagorean record. OPS+ 108, ERA+ 116.

Nova got a hit this year. He’s 1 for 3 with 2 strikeouts. For his career, 1 for 7, that one single, and six strikeouts. One sac bunt.

Jeter SS .316-6-21  5/6  111   3174 hits, 10 behind Ripken. 86 this year tops AL
Granderson CF .253-20-39  3/6  131
Rodriguez 3B  .275-10-31  6/6  113   tied for Yanks SB lead w/Nunez, Wise
Cano 2B .296-11-30  1/1  132
Teixeira 1B .243-11-38  1/2  105
Ibanez LF .246-10-32  2/2  106   .184 in last 15 games. At 40, is rest needed?
Jones RF .225-6-13  0/0  102     20 for 89, 32 strikeouts
Stewart C  .240-0-7  0/0  39       12 for 50
Nova RHP   8-2, 4.64   ERA+ 92       24-6 since beginning of 2011. 25-8 in career.

See Ibanez above. He wasn’t supposed to be playing the OF as much, but with Gardner’s injury… meanwhile, how long can the Yanks keep Ronnier Mustelier (combined AA/AAA stats this year .331-11-44) down?

Nova and CC are two of six pitchers tied for the AL lead in wins with 8.

Update: Nats have DFA’d Brad Lidge.

Lidge to Nats

35 yr. old Brad Lidge has signed a deal with the Nationals. Lidge missed 1/2 of 2011, and went 0-2, 1.40, 1 save for the Phils. He had the “perfect” season of 2008, when he had no blown saves while going 2-0, 41 saves, 1.95 that year as the Phils won the WS. From there, he had a miserable 2009, going 0-8, 7.21, 31 saves. An ERA+ drop of 226 to 59.

Lidge was on the mound when Johnny Damon pulled off his “double steal” of 2nd and 3rd on the same play, and he then went on to lose game 4 of that 2009 WS.

Lidge is 26-31, 3.44 for his career with 223 saves. (Hou 2002-2007, Phils 2008-2011).  ERA+ 126. In the postseason, he is 2-4, 2.18 with 18 saves, second only in postseason saves to the great Mariano Rivera (42).

2011 WS Game 5: Napoli does it again. Rangers up 3 games to 2.

Mike Napoli did it again, putting in his bid for WS MVP, as his bases-loaded double knocked in two runs in the bottom of the 8th to give the Rangers a 4-2 win.

Napoli had a big 3-run HR in Game 4 and also HR’d in Texas’ Game 1 loss. He has 9 RBI in the Series so far.

For a while, it looked like sloppy Texas D by Moreland would cost the Rangers. For the second time in this Series, he appeared to have a play at the plate and couldn’t execute.

Game 6 is scheduled for Wednesday night in St. Louis. Texas could win their first title ever with a win.

BTW, Derek Holland’s moustache has to be one of the cheesiest I’ve ever seen. He’s 25? He looks 17 with that moustache (which looks like he drank chocolate milk) and probably would look 14 without it.

In other news, the Phils declined options on Oswalt and Lidge. If they want them back, it’ll be at a lower cost.

The minors tonight.

First off, some good news. It appears as if both Soriano and Chavez will be starting rehab games next week. By the end of the month, if Soriano can join the bullpen, and Chavez can platoon with Nunez at 3B until A-Rod comes back, that’ll be good.

BUT… I don’t give Soriano the 8th inning right off. I keep Robertson there where he belongs for now. If Soriano doesn’t like that, the heck with him. You HAVE to keep Robertson in the 8th based on what he’s done so far this year.

AAA: SWB 7-4 losers. Romero 1 2/3 scoreless. Pendleton 2 R in 4 IP but George Kontos 5 R, 4 ER in 2 1/3.

AA: Trenton bombed 13-2. Craig Heyer 7 R, 5 ER in 5 IP (7-5, 3.66). Pat Venditte 3 scoreless IP but Brad Halsey has to go. His experiment hasn’t worked out. 6 R, 2 ER in 2/3 IP. 6.46 ERA.

Trenton played Reading, and Brad Lidge of the Phils is on rehab for Reading. Lidge tossed a scoreless inning, but I am reading that scouts are not impressed that he is only hitting about 86 on the gun right now.

High A: Tampa lost 3-2.

Low A: Charleston lost 13-6. 3 RBI for Kevin Mahoney.

Staten Island: Mason Williams 3 for 5 (.374).

Outside the lines.

Interesting stuff going on elsewhere in baseball.

A lot of rib cage injuries, Jason Bay being the latest. It’s funny how Suzyn Waldman on the radio said to stop the weightlifting. She does have a point. I remember a comment made years ago by Tony Kubek advising flexibility and not muscle-boundness. Interesting.

The sordidness of the Bonds trial is also interesting. The Giambis testimony. Jason’s testimony casts a dark spell on his time in 2003 with the Yanks (but then you wonder how it also affected his poor 2004 and therefore the ALCS of that year). So much went on then, with so many players that all you can do is shake your head. Sad. If you think this is bad enough, what happens when Clemens goes to trial?

Now the Phils have Lidge out 3-6 weeks. Utley already a question mark. Polanco has problems. … and more. Bad Karma there. I wonder what the Phils’ fans that I heard not long ago who predicted 105 wins are saying now? Hey, it’s like I’ve been saying. You have to play the games.
