Semple, a 23 yr. old RHP, is 1-0, 0.69 as Charleston’s closer so far this year. In three games, 13 innings, he’s given up one run on three hits and has struck out 26. Seems like the kid could be getting a promotion to Tampa soon.

Nice team effort.

AAA: SWB (7-4) won 9-5. 2B Thairo Estrada 2 hits, RBI. 1B Mike Ford 2 hits, 3 RBI. HR.  (.471=5-14). Doing much better than Greg Bird right now. DH Ryan McBroom solo HR. SS Gosuke Katoh 2 hits, RBI. LF Zach Zehner 2 hits. C Kellin Deglan 2 run HR.

Gio Gonzalez 5 IP, 2 R, 8 H, 2 W, 8 K. Interesting call coming up for the Yanks soon.  I really don’t know if he has pitched well enough to be brought up to the big league club yet. Opt out date, April 20.

Minor League Report/Problem with Sanchez?/Ex-Yankee Sanderson dies.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

The Yankees were off Thursday.

I will not have a report on any of Friday’s action. I’ll be out of town.

AAA: SWB (4-4) won 9-8 in 10 innings. PH Mandy Alvarez GW hit.  LF Trey Amburgey 2 hits. 1B Mike Ford 2 hits, 2 RBI. C Kyle Higashioka 2 RBI, but had to leave the game (see below) .RF/1B Ryan McBroom 2 hits. 3B Gosuke Katoh 2 hits, HR, 3 RBI.

It appears as if Chance Adams, so good a few years ago, has taken a step backwards in his development.

The reason Higashioka was called up was—wait for it—there may be ANOTHER Yankee going on the DL, and that may be Gary Sanchez.

AA Trenton was off.

High A: Tampa (2-6) lost 8-6. SS Oswaldo Cabrera 2 hits, RBI. LF Tyler Hill 2 RBI. 3B David Metzgar HR, 2 RBI. Deivi Garcia 4 IP, 2 unearned runs, 6 K.

Low A: Charleston (4-4) lost 4-0. DH Josh Breaux 2 of the Riverdogs’ 5 hits.

Scott Sanderson, who spent two years with the Yankees in 1991 and 1992, has died at the age of 62. He was an All-Star in 1991. He spent 19 season in the majors, going 163-143, 3.84. His 162 g. average was 13-11, 3.84.

Sanderson was with the Expos (1978-1983), Cubs (1984-1989), A’s (1990), Yankees (1991-1992), Angels (1993), Giants (1993), White Sox (1994) and back with the Angels (1995-1996).

He was with the 1981 Expos that played in the NLCS, the 1984 and 1989 Cubs that played in the NLCS, and the 1990 AL pennant winning A’s. He got into five postseason games, going 0-0, 5.73.

Some of Sanderson’s best seasons:
1980 Expos 16-11, 3.11
1984 Cubs 8-5, 3.14
1989 Cubs 11-9, 3.94
1990 A’s 17-11, 3.88

For the Yankees, he went 16-10, 3.91 in 1991 and 12-11, 4.93 in 1992.

He was the player who wore #21 before Paul O’Neill.

S.T. Game 1. Yanks lose, 8-5.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

The Yanks got off to a 3-0 lead on Boston but lost 8-5 in their first spring training game this season.

The good:

Aaron Hicks had an RBI double.

Gleyber Torres homered.

Greg Bird was 2 for 2 with an opposite field double and a single to right.

Clint Frazier smoked a single up the middle and hit a long fly to right caught on the warning track.

Ryan McBroom hit a HR.

Tyler Wade had a double, as did Trey Amburgey.

The not so good:

A lot of pitchers the Yanks used in the game are pitchers that, quite frankly, we don’t want to see on the mound for the Yankees at any time this year.

They were pitchers destined for AAA or pitchers that are not so hot trying to stay in the majors by latching on to the Yanks or are pitching for the Yanks hoping to latch on to another club by pitching well now and having another club pick them up.

Cortes (L) 2 2/3 IP, 4 R, 6 H, 0 W, 3 K.
Hutchinson 1 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 1 W, 0 K. Gave up 3-run HR.
Coulombe 1 1 /3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Coshow 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 1 K.
Brothers 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K
Harvey 2/3 IP, 2 R, 3 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Diehl 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.

Cortes has 4 games of MLB experience, 0-0, 7.71. 24, LHP,  AAA bound where in 35 games (25 starts) he is 9-10, 2.93.

Hutchinson is a guy the Yanks are looking at but a guy you wonder why they are even looking at him. A DFA candidate. The first four batters he faced today were a double, HR, single and walk. In 2018, 5 starts and 11 relief appearances for the Phillies and Texas. 2-2, 6.75. 32-23, 5.10 in his career. Hoping to just latch on to a team …. anywhere. As I mentioned, a DFA candidate hoping to (if he doesn’t make the Yanks) show himself off to someone else. He didn’t do that today.

Coulombe was 1-1, 4.56 for the Rockies in 2018, 6-4, 4.27 in his MLB career. Another marginal major leaguer like Hutchinson hoping to get a crack at the majors, maybe go to AAA with the Yanks or prove himself to another team. Another DFA candidate.

I don’t mean to be rough on Hutchinson or Coulombe, but remember last year when infielder Danny Espinosa, the former Nationals infielder, was in camp and was let go after just a couple of weeks? That is what I am thinking of Hutchinson and Coulombe. In for a look-see, but won’t be there long.

Coshow was lousy at AAA SWB last year, 1-4, 4.95.

Brothers pitched in just one MLB game last year. He was with Colorado 2011-2015 and with the Braves in 2017. 20-14, 3.79 in his MLB career.

Harvey and Diehl are both AA or AAA bound.

The Yanks and Bosox didn’t use too many players today that would be considered for the MLB roster.

For the Yanks, it was Torres, Hicks, Andujar, Bird (maybe, he has to beat out Voit) and perhaps Frazier as far as guys you consider major leaguers.

None of the pitchers.

The Yanks face Tampa Bay at home tomorrow. 1 PM, MLB.

Minor League Report. SWB takes Game 1 of International League Finals, 3-2.

cropped-the-stadium-facade.jpg

Before the game report, some news about the Governor’s Cup (the International League Finals) between SWB (the Yankees’ AAA affiliate) and Durham. All of the games in the best-of-five series have to be played at SWB because of the hurricane about to wreck havoc (if it hasn’t done so already) to the Carolinas.

So SWB will be the home team for Games 1 and 2 and the “away” team for Games 3, 4 and 5 (4 and 5 if needed).

SWB took Game 1 last night, 3-2, in a game that had its own long rain delay.

Durham got a run in the fifth, but SWB came back with three in the bottom of the fifth. Bruce Caldwell with a 2-run double, Ryan McBroom an RBI single.

Ex-Yankee Rob Refsnyder homered for Durham in the seventh.

Caldwell 2 RBI
Zack Zehner 2 hits

German 3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 5 K.
Sheffield (W) 3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 1 W, 2 K.
Sosebee (H) 1 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 0 W, 0 K. Gave up HR
Coshow (H) 1/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W, 0 K.
Harvey (H) 2/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.
Kontos (S) 1 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 1 W, 0 K.
