S.T. Game #8, vs. Washington @ GMS Field. CC & Joba roughed up in Yanks 10-8 loss.

S.T. Game #8. I believe it’s on YES for those who have it, possibly also WCBS 880 AM. CC gets his work in today.

Brett Gardner LF
Nick Swisher RF
Curtis Granderson CF
Jorge Posada DH
Eric Chavez 3B
Jesus Montero C
Eduardo Nunez 2B
Jorge Vazquez 1B
Ramiro Pena SS

CC Sabathia

Girardi: Impressed by Betances, Banuelos, Chavez, Nunez, Brackman (hasn’t gotten into game yet). With Cervelli’s injury, Montero has opening.Notice Killer “B’s” mentioned. Also, Nunez over Pena for backup IF job? Chavez to make team and be a steal? Pena, Laird, Vazquez AAA bound?

Not on YES. My fault.

CC gets his work in, but it’s worst performance by a starter so far this spring. 2 2/3 IP, 5 R, 6 H, 2 walks, 1 K. Gave up 1 HR. Joba finished the inning for him. After 3, Washington up 5-0.

Crazy day as Yanks get 8 in 4th to take the lead. Gardner double, Swisher reach on E4, Gardner scores. Granderson walks, Posada reaches on E1, Swisher scores, 2nd and 3rd. Chavez singles one in, Montero singles one in. Nunez singles one in. The hot Vazquez doubles two in. All with no out. After an out, Gardner, who doubled to start the inning, triples in a run. Then two groundouts strand Gardner. With the long inning, Robertson pulled after just one batter (K). Fish in. Has scoreless inning.

Fish pitched two scoreless innings (Rule 5 pitcher). Turpen, another Rule 5, goes 1, gives up 2 R, 1 ER. Nationals take lead. Romulo Sanchez gives up a run on 2 H, 2 walks in his inning. Austin Romine has rough inning. 2 SB on the young catcher, then he doubles leading off inning but in thrown out trying for 3 while team down 10-8. Mistake by 22 yr. old prospect there. Ryan Pope pitches scoreless 9th. Yanks lose 10-8, fall to 2-5-1 in S.T. play.

Both Rule 5 pitchers, Fish & Turpen, will probably be offered back to their teams. Just saying.

Game 147. Sanchez up, BG in, Swish out.

LoHud reports that the Yanks added Romulo Sanchez to the team today. Sanchez was up earlier for the Yanks and pitched in one game, going 3 2/3, 0 R, 1 H, 1 W and 3 K. At SWB this year, he was 10-8, 3.97, 14 starts out of 31 games.

Gardner back. Swish and Posada out. Kearns “The Rally Killer” in.

Yankees 88-58, 1/2 game back. Losers of 8 of their last 10.
Two games WORSE than their pythagorean record.
Magic # 11 for the playoffs.
OPS+ 108, ERA+ 111

Austin Kearns RF .264-10-49-4/5; 107; As Yankee? 20 for 86 but 31 strikeouts.

Francisco Cervelli C  .255-0-35-1/2; 79

RHP AJ Burnett 10-13, 5.13. ERA + 84.

Hopefully the chinese water torture—where Kearns comes up and strands runners—stops. I can’t take anymore.

The minors 4/20/10

AAA: SWB lost 11-7. The winner for Buffalo in relief? Elmer Dessens. For SWB, the bullpen fell apart. Romulo Sanchez gave up 3 R in 6 IP, but Zach Segovia 4 R in only 1/3 of an inning, and Kevin Whelan 4 R in 1 2/3. Ugly. 3-run HR by … Montero C. (1 for 4, .295-2-9). Chad Huffman LF with a 2-run HR. 2 hits for Kevin Russo 2B/3B, 3 for Eduardo Nunez SS.

AA: Trenton lost 2-1. Jeremy Bleich 2 R in 5 1/3. Only 4 H, but 6 walks. 3 hits for Dave Adams 2B (.370).

High A: 3-0 win for Tampa. Adam Warren 0 R, 1 H in 6 IP. Pat Venditte 2 scoreless and hitless IP. Combined 2-hitter.   Corban Joseph (2B) and Walter Ibarra (DH) each with 2 hits and a ribbie.

Low A: Charleston lost 8-6. Sean Black 5 IP, 7 R, 5 ER. Zoilo Almonte CF 3 hits, 2 HR, 3 RBI. DH Luke Murton 2 hits, 3 RBI.

The minors tonight, 4/15/10

AAA: SWB got hammered, 14-6. Terrible outing for Romulo Sanchez. 2 1/3 IP, 10 R, 6 H, 5 walks. Kevin Whelan gave up 2 runs in 2 IP, Zack Segovia 1 in 2 1/3, and Boone Logan 1 in 2 1/3.

Chad Huffman 3 for 4, 2 doubles, RBI.

AA: Trenton won 4-2 in 11. Jeremy Bleich 6 IP, 2 R, 4 H, 3 walks and 3 K. Three scoreless innings by Wilkins De La Rosa. Eric Wordekemper two scoreless for the W. Damon Sublett 2-run HR in the top of the 11th.

High A: 2-1 loss for Tampa. Tough one for Adam Warren. 5 IP. 2 R 6 H 2 walks and 3K

Low A:  6-4 win for Charleston. 2 run HR for Kyle Higashioka. Kelvin Castro 2 for 2, 2 RBI. Ben Watkins three scoreless for the W.

Minors today.

Most games are at night. SWB with an afternoon game.

AAA: SWB goes extras. 2-1 loss in 11. Romulo Sanchez 4 2/3 scoreless, 5 K. Igawa 2 1/3 scoreless. Melancon gave up a HR in the 8th, 2 IP. Colin Curtis, who along with Eduardo Nunez had three hits, had a two-out hit in the bottom of the 9th to tie, but Albaladejo, who went 2 innings, gave up a HR in the 11th that cost SWB the game.

Now for some others. An update.

First, Christian Garcia, the pitching prospect with a lot to offer but with so many injuries, got bad news. He went 5 2/3 scoreless the other day but felt something in his elbow in the 3rd inning or so. After 5 2/3 he was done. How done? It’s a torn ligament.

Another piece of news, also from LoHud: Allan Horne, so good a few years ago and battling injury woes since, will not undergo shoulder surgery. He’s trying that platelet replacement therapy.

AA: Trenton won 4-1. 3 hits, 3 RBI, double, HR for Dave Adams. 2 doubles for Luis Nunez. Jeremy Bleich 6 2/3 IP, 0 R, 2 H, 1 walk, 5 K.

High A:   2-0 shutout win for Tampa. A combined 1-hitter. Adam Warren 6 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 1 walk, 4 K. Switch-pitcher Pat Venditte finished, 3 IP, 0 R, 0 hits, 0 walks and 4 K. Abe Almonte 2 for 4, Brad Suttle 2 hits, double, RBI.

Low A:  Charleston lost 8-4. Four players with 2 hits each.

Yanks win 6-4 in S.T. game. Curtis making a case for a midseason callup.

Colin Curtis is 25, and last year between AA and AAA hit a combined .250 with 7 HR and 48 RBI. The lefty hitter hit .255-10-71 at AA in 2008. Ok, it doesn’t look that impressive.

But Curtis is having a nice spring training for the Yankees this year. Although it would be a major shock to see him on the opening day roster, he may be opening some eyes and could be a midseason callup to the show. Tonight his 3-run PH HR was the difference in a 6-4 Yankees win.

Javy Vazquez went 3 innings, 1 R, 2 hits, 2 walks, 3 K. He made a mistake that Carlos Pena took deep. Romulo Sanchez went 2/3 of an inning and gave up 2 R, 1 ER. Boone Logan made a case for 2nd lefty in the bullpen (a longshot) by facing one batter (Crawford) and getting a K.

Chan Ho Park made his S.T. debut a good one. An inning, 1-2-3 with a K. David Robertson (whom I have been high on since 2007) had a 1-2-3 with 2 Ks. Mark Melancon gave up a run in 2 innings of work, and Dustin Moseley closed out the game.

Jeter had a 2-run double.

Guys looking at midseason callups, besides Curtis, appear to be Melancon, Jon Weber, Kevin Russo  and Logan—should none be taken north for opening day.

If you don’t make the team, make an impression. It’s a long season.

Finally get to watch baseball again! Cervelli gets b-day gift he did not want as Yanks lose S.T. game, 9-1.

Today’s game is on My 9, so I get to watch some spring training baseball (in between housecleaning and laundry). Yeah!

Our LV Yankee Fan club site on Facebook posts today’s lineup vs. Toronto:  Jeter-6, Granderson-8, Posada-2, Rodriguez-5, Winn-9, Gardner-7, Cervelli-DH, Miranda-3, Pena-4, Burnett-1.

Apparently Adeiny Hechevarria has now been cleared to be signed by any MLB club. The 21 year old SS that defected from Cuba is expected to be signed by the Yankees.

Update: Shaky outing for Burnett. 1 2/3, 2 R, 5 H, 1 walk. Thank goodness for batting helmets. Cervelli got a birthday present (24) that he didn’t want—a beanball. Looks like A.J. was trying to work on that new pitch—a changeup.

Update II: Cervelli is headed to the hospital with a concussion. Thank goodness spring training is in it’s early stages and thank goodness for batting helmets. He got conked pretty good. The reporter on My 9 says the stitches of the ball are imprinted on the helmet. Ouch.

Update III: Not a good outing for Albaladejo. Gives up a 3-run dinger. 5 R, 7 H, 1 walk in just 1/3 of an inning.  Boone Logan had looked decent, 2 scoreless.

Recap: It got a bit boring, as the Yanks lost 9-1. Mark Melancon pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, but Andrew Brackman gave up 2 runs in his one inning. Romulo Sanchez and Jason Hirsh each pitched a scoreless inning. The bats were quiet for some time. The Yanks only had one hit through the first five innings and just six for the game. Adam Lind had the 3-run HR off Albaladejo; J.P. Arencibia a 2-run shot off Brackman.

The Yanks fall to 1-3 for the spring so far.
