Game 140. Severino, Sanchez, sloppy as A’s blast Yanks, 8-2.

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Luis Severino threw two wild pitches and Gary Sanchez was charged with two passed balls as Oakland scored four runs in the first inning and went on to beat the Yankees, 8-2, Wednesday night.

The loss drops the 87-53 Yankees 9 1/2 back of Boston in the AL East with 22 games to go. The tragic # for Boston to win the East is 13. But the Yanks only lead the A’s by 3 1/2 for that top wild card spot. The Yanks’ magic # to get the top wild card spot is 19, and to make the playoffs, it’s 14.

The Yanks’ offense continued to be in their funk, getting only 5 hits all night. After the A’s scored their four in the first, they got two in the third, and one in the fourth, one in the sixth and were up 8-0.

The Yanks’ only 2 runs came when Sanchez hit a 2-run HR (15) in the seventh.

Meanwhile, more worries about Severino.

Severino (L, 17-7, 3.52) 2 2/3 IP, 6 R, 5 ER, 6 H, 1 W, 3 K.
Holder 1 1/3 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 W, 0 K.  3.20
Cessa 3 IP, 1 R, 3 H, 0 W, 2 K.  5.13
Tarpley 2/3 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0 W, 2 K.  16.20
Kahnle 1/3 IP, 0 R, 0 H, 0 W, 1 K.  5.94

Clint Frazier won’t be back this year. Hopefully he recovers from those concussion issues over the offseason and is 100% and ready to go in 2019.

As for Luke Voit, is he this year’s Kevin Maas or Shane Spencer?

Over the course of minor league seasons, players come and go. I can’t report on every one, but one person let go by the Yanks yesterday was 1B Connor Spencer.

First to HR in MLB game on West Coast dies: Daryl Spencer

Yankee Stadium Frieze

Daryl Spencer, an infielder, and the first major leaguer to hit a MLB home run on the West Coast, has passed away at the age of 88.

After the move of the NY Giants and Brooklyn Dodgers to the west coast after the 1957 season, it was Spencer who hit the first HR out west when his now San Francisco Giants hosted the now Los Angeles Dodgers at Seals Stadium on April 15, 1958. The HR, off Don Drysdale, helped the Giants win the game 8-0.

Spencer played for the Giants, Cardinals, Dodgers and Reds from 1952-1963. He missed all of the 1954 and 1955 seasons due to military service, thus missing out on the 1954 NY Giants WS title year.

He hit .244 in his career, playing SS, 2B and 3B, and had 105 HR. His 162 g. average was .244-15-63, OPS+ 89.

SWB’s Manager suggests that an overlooked minor leaguer that could help the team is OF Ben Gamel. Perhaps if Gardner can be dealt for pitching help (offered, no takers), that may happen.

AAA: SWB won 10-4. Gamel had 2 hits, 2 RBI. Severino shaky, 5 2/3 IP, 4 runs. Apparently the Yanks want him to concentrate on his changeup right now and aren’t too concerned with results as long as he throws and perfects the change. Severino, however, should just keep his mouth shut. He stated that he could just work on things in the majors instead of being demoted. Not with an ERA over 7.00 you won’t. Time to shut the Yap, Luis, and do what they tell you. You should be a bit more humble with that MLB ERA over 7.00 this year. Mason Williams 3 hits, RBI (another candidate for OF spot if Gardner dealt) . Donovan Solano 3 hits. Refsnyder 2 hits, RBI. Frazier 2 hits. Jake Cave 3 hits, 2 RBI.

AA: Trenton won 4-1. Chance Adams only went 4 1/3 (Innings limit?)   1 R, 3 H, 2 walks and 10 K.  Wondering why pulled after 10 of 13 outs recorded were by strikeout.  2 hits, RBI Dustin Fowler.

High A:   Tampa won 3-0 on a 2-hitter. Yefrey Ramirez 8 IP, 1 hit, 0 walks, 8 K. Connor Spencer 2 hits and an RBI.

Low A: Charleston won 4-1. Daris Vargas 6 shutout IP.

The Minors. Adams’ streak ends.

The Minors. Big game for Tampa’s Cornelius.

Yankee Stadium Frieze
